This might have been a big mistake. :o

-
It is only a mistake if you do not put it in your jeep. hmmmm 6 litre? and nv4500.
-
You got a smokin deal on those items Klapper. You don't have to use it anytime soon , but it'll come in handy one day. My garage is full of crap that I've purchased in the hopes of one day using for something .

Yeah Six Liters of Doom. It's the 315HP version with 370ft/lbs of torque...with emissions and manifolds. I'm going to run w/o emissions and shorty headers so I have to build prepared for 400ish HP. I will probably look into running some sort of programmable tuner to keep the power down for now.
The price was so good I couldn't pass it up; I basically paid what the transmission (brand new) with shipping would be worth. Plus I couldn't think of any reason why not to. Besides you know, kissing my tcase, HP 'turdy and driveshafts goodbye. Now I'm hoping for a mild winter so it won't be -26 in my garage again!
Lots of work to do.
-Radiator, hoses, steam system, electric fans, shroud, wiring
-Engine + tcase mounts
-Atlas/StaK/D300, do I want passenger or driver side drop (ie, what axle am I going with), also changes exhaust routing
-Front axle, steering, track bar
-Air intake system (air box, tubing, possibly run LS1 intake manifold which gains hood clearance and hp but loses low end torque)
-Frame/cage?
-PCM marriage (run Jeep computer in tandem to allow gauge cluster to work, add in tachometer converter)
-Add fuel regulator, larger tank
At this point I'll be looking at tube fenders and some gnarly sized tires with hydro steer.
I think I'm going to stay with a driver side drop, truss the HP D30, stay on 33s for the winter and pray the 231 doesn't blow up.

Take pics for us when it does ;D

Great score! Farmers almanac says it's going to be the coldest winter in 20 years!

I heard that. Luckily I have an ace in the hole; 80,000 square feed of heated shop space

I am going to guess that you are working for Kidco because that is not the Finning Calgary Shop.
-
I will do show and tell as well. here is my crew pulling the 3516 out of a 793D, at the COE Red Deer, that engine is about 3 stories up. we needed to clear the cab to get it on the floor.

Good guess, you got it.

Divorced the engine and transmission and put the enine up on a stand. Any idea how much of a PITA it is to try to find M10x1.5x120 bolts to fit through the stand? Especially in grade 8+? Solution: use grinder to trim down tubes on stand, use M10x1.5x80 grade 12 bolts ;D
After the engine was on the stand I pulled off the coil packs and exhaust manifolds/EGR.

Next step was to pour on the degreaser and wear out a couple SOS pads.

Looking much better, but still have some work to do.

Looking good dude! Let me know if you need a grease monkey to hand you tools or beers! Would love the experience!

Im trudging through the wiring/plumbing now. you got a heck of a deal..
If you want me to try it out for you I could!

Whats a set of them "axel stands" worth? ;D
After building natural gas compressors for a few years, I still love piping to those motors. And then watching the start-up. Damn, those things roar! 8) Me loves its!
-
Research these engines, they actually run better with the emissions intact.
Lots of data on the internets on LS engine tuning,
EFI Live is a good tuner I just happen to know someone that has one ::)
the 231 should hold up,for awhile, but the axles...?
Good luck keep us posted.
-
Well took care of the t-case issue. Dana 300 with 32 spline outputs and a 23 spline input to match my NV4500! Brink is running one of these behind his 500ci so I don't think I've got to worry about blowing it up any time soon.

Well I lunched a u-joint in the front driveshaft somewhere. I think it may be in the double cardan and as I'm planning on replacing the shafts and axles in the (near?) future I have no desire to spend any money on getting this rebuilt.
Solution? Pull the shaft off the 4.0L parts jeep. Looks to be about 2" longer so I adjusted the controls arms and stretched the front axle about 1-1.5". Seems to be ok for now and the squeak is gone, I'll have to disconnect the sway bar and flex the jeep a bit to make sure the driveshaft isn't bottoming out. For now I'm only going to be on pavement for a bit so I'll leave it.

Looks like fun. Heads up on the 4500, it needs a lot of height. So you have to choose between a ton of body lift, a very low hanging belly, floor cutting, or a combo of all the above.
I went with a flat belly, cut the floor pan out, and used 2.5" of body lift to get this setup.

Nice. Can't wait to see it stuffed in that TJ.
I just picked up a 330hp 6.0L my self for the Jeepster. And a large shoe horn of course.

Thanks for the tip, the body lift might be the best option as I'll need some room for larger tires without going any (or much) higher on the suspension. Luckily I have this white TJ stripped down to the frame/tub to play around with clearances. I might be able to come up with a t-case mount that gets me a little lower.
What are you running for a tcase and what did you do for a mount? I'd be interested in coming to see how you shoehorned your 4500 in if you have time, just name your drink!
-
I dont drink, but the coffee's always on at my place. Pick a warm day and come on out. I run a Klune Atlas combo clocked flat, which also pokes through my floor because of how high I stuff the 4500. The 300 should afford you a bit more room then what I have.
Dont forget the 5th gear retaining nut mod for the 4500. I didnt do it on mine when I rebuilt it and its been a 4 speed ever since...lol
-
You don't REALLY need to do over 80km/h do you? ;D
I have to go to Deadmonton tomorrow but I'll try giving you a call this weekend, thanks a lot.
-
Sure man, sounds good.
With 538's and 38's you can still do 65mph at around 3200 rpm. Not that bad..lol

Ironically the 6.0L takes up less space then the 4.0L

I think everything will fill fit together fine. A little clearance here and there. So far 1" body lift, TMR transmission cross member tucked a little under frame, and TMR 1" drop skid plate. We will sort out the driveshafts but all angles will be low. North West Fab twin stick cable Shifters and everything will fit good. Lets hope that 8.8 and 30 last the summer ;D

I finally got to take it for a spin... It's a beast! I'm a huge fan of The 4.0L but this is a whole other animal. It's a serious upgrade but well worth it!

First time driving the jeep with this setup off the pavement and only got one walkaround of the new course so you can hear more and more throttle used throughout the race.
Ripped the airlock off the rear locker, that's the rocks in the differential noise you hear on the last lap. Also shifted the rad and blew the water pump.
