Post by: frenchy on May 19, 2012, 09:17:16 AM
Meet at the store.
We will hit a few popular camp spots and some trails.

No requirements except properly functioning 4x4 vehicle.
The usual recommendations, food, water, gloves, self sufficient.
Burlap garbage bag strapped to rear spare tire will be handy

Sounds like a good idea....
- I can provide my Jeep and two bodies....
- If my wife is not using the truck (Ford F150 4X4) I can bring it to haul stuff away?

I don't think we'll need pickup trucks, or be able to get them over burms and into many trails.
If someone brings a truck and leaves it at the store it could possibly be used if needed.

Gloves, shovels, pick axe, fencing tools, hammer, could all be useful.

Wish I could make it but I have a wedding to go to... just curious though would a mostly stock xj with 235/75r15 mud tires have a problem with where the cleanup will be? I have the back lifted 1.5" and the front lifted 3/4"... I'm new to the McLean area and Jeeps I had an f150 before but never took it to McLean...

Try finding some stocker friendly open runs,
Most members who are willing to lead a run are going to be fairly competent deciding trail difficulty.

Wish I could make it out, but highschool grad on friday  ;D
Going to be either super hungover or still drunk haha.

I'm in...couple questions
-is this still a go regardless of the weather or conditions?
-I assume we work in groups?
-Stock Rubicon JKU is ok?
             -no CB
             -no winch
Also, unfortunately my wife will be using the truck so I can not haul the garbage away.

In years past most of the haul has been from Fisher West below the Widowmaker, I can get my F-250 4X4 with an 8' box in there, as long are the no new "suprises".  Would that help?  Let me know and I will empty it out.

There is a large trench cut on the road to widow maker, No problem for Jeeps but I'm pretty sure they built it to keep stock trucks out.
Maybe somebody who's been out lately in a truck can chime in.

Thank you all for coming out and lending a hand!

Wasn't too much at all to clean up compared to previous years, good to see  :)

We will have more casual (sorry Darren  ;D ) work / wheeling days coming up if interested, stay tuned.

Sorry I missed out on the Top of the world trip.  I just didn't trust myself to be able to handle it.  The whole Airing down thing is something I am unfamilliar with and a bit scared of.  I wheeled my old rig (in the 70s  & 80s) for over 5 years most weekends and the subject of airing down never even came up.  The whole thing seems a bit on the extreme side to me (maybe I'm just getting old).

Anyway, it was fun going with you guys and doing the cleanup.

I know...I never air down before and I did lots of hard core stuff in the oil patch and spent my time stuck waiting for a tow.  However, you know what they say...old dog new tricks...airing down is the next best thing since sliced bread!  I am a believer now....I'm an old dog with a new trick...LOL

#1 reason to air down.  Ride Quality.  Anyone with leaf springs can explain the difference ;)
Yes a lot has changed in 30-40 years.  ie BIAS PLY to Radial tires (major difference).  There is nothing to be scared of except more traction and comfort.  the worst you'll pop a bead.  have a compressor, a little water, and a ratchet strap, back on the trail in a few minutes.
Drink the Kool-aid it's GOOOD

Any suggestions on a good air compressor?  BTW what is a Ratchet Strap?  Just for information, I was running on radials back then (BFG Radial A/T).

BTW what is a Ratchet Strap?

A strap with a ratchet end on it.   They are made specifically to make grown men feel really small when someone hands them one on the trail for the first time and can't figure out how to use them...  ::)

Once you use one, they will start multiplying like rabbits in your jeep cause you will use them for everything.  Holding down tools, coolers, chainsaws, small children, large children (some of them are long).  You will even start color coding them.
