Title: Waiparous trail project - October 22nd
Post by: AstraX on August 20, 2016, 02:15:32 PM
Hey everyone,

I am trying to arrange a day or two to do some bank stabilization around the new bridges being put in around Waiparous.

This will be done with the back country rehab program people and we are looking at the weekends in October.  If you are interested in taking part in this please post up what weekend will work best for you.

This will be the 4x4 groups first opportunity to do some work with this program so it would be nice to have a really strong turnout.

**UPDATE**

This is going ahead.  One day only.
Meet at the South Ghost staging area between 9-9:30AM.
Tools are not required but if you have a large hammer or some sort of a planters bar.

We have 2 bridges to Deck and willow sticks to plant on the banks.

Post up to let me know if you are going to make it.

I'm interested for sure. Not sure what my schedule will be. I'll know more closer to October.

I'm interested aswell. Are you figuring multiple weekends?

If something breaks, it's an opportunity to upgrade!

No it will be one weekend.  I would just like to pick one that we will get the biggest turnout on.

Is this bridge going to be for a truck trail?  The one shown on their site is a quad trail currently with winter only truck use.  Is it being changed to a truck trail?

Do you have a link for the new map?
Edited. Yes believe that is one of the trails that will be open to full size trucks year round.

Yes the large loop of the winter trails for trucks is going to be open to us year round.  Unless the federal government agrees to pay for about 5 bridges with are going to lose the small northern loop of the winter trails for good.

The bridges for this project are between points 139 & 141 from what I understand.

I am just updating this to confirm it is going to be the Oct 22/23rd weekend.

It sounds like we will be decking a couple of bridges and willow staking the banks around them.  If I am understanding correctly we will be between points 77 & 87 on the map.

Let me know if you are going to be able to make it so I can give them some kind of number.

Thanks

It is.

The plan is to have all the work done on the 22nd so just one day.

He said the only tools we need will be big hammers to drive the spikes in for the decking, and planting bars(like tree planters use) to make holes for the willow sticks.

Below are the responses I have received from the volunteer coordinator.

"Hi Dan,

If you have any planting bars or heavy duty hammers, you can bring them for sure. We will be using galvanised spikes to deck the timber bridges. I think if there is enough of us, we should be able to get both bridges decked and some willows planted by the end of the 22nd. I don’t plan on being there on the Sunday."

 "Hi Dan,

Just wanted to touch base with you about the potential project on October 22nd. The location of the work sites will now be on the main GhP4 road system, and we will be working on both of the new timber bridge that cross Lost Knife and 4 Mile creek. The work will involve decking the bridges as well as willow staking the banks. Let me know if you have any questions or concerns. As far as timing goes, we can aim to be at the south Ghost Staging area for 9-930am."

Just got an update that the crews working on the bridges have gotten ahead of plan.  We will just be planting willows so no hammers are needed.

As far as a planters bar, what I have pictured it as is like an ice bar with the pointy end.  I could be completely wrong, but I think its for you to stab a hole in the dirt to insert a willow bough.

Ghost staging area. A mile or so before the lost knife trail head. On the left side of the forestry trunk road.

Yup was good time. A bigger turnout would have provided for a little more time to explore some trails... or would it? ;)
Did you nail down your engine cutout issue yet?
