Post by: 01sahara on July 24, 2006, 09:48:12 PM
Stocker Run and Trail Clean Up

Saturday August 19th.

The current plan is to take a run out to the falls in Waiparus. The trail is an easy one. Along the side of the trail is an old rusted and rotten utility trailer. In an effort to provide some stewardship of the remaining trail in the area I would like to see if we can’t disassemble and cut the trailer up so we can haul it out.  Please bring hacksaws, tools and work gloves.

Minimum requirements:
Tires with good tread.
Mechanically sound jeep.
Front & Rear tow points.
Tow strap with looped ends (no hooks).

CB radio.

This should be an easy run with a small trail project  as a bonus.
I would like to meet at Smtty’s in Cochrane and leave by 8:30 for the trail. I will likely be there by 7:30 for breakfast. New guys are welcome.

Please post if your interested.

Thanks,

Blair.

Barring any unforseeable misfortune I should be there. Give me a chance to run her and try her out.

You made the trail the other day at Mclean with those tires and this trail is much easier. You will be fine on those tires. They have good tread right? Aren't they just a street tread?

Put me down as a "Maybe"
Depends on 3 things:
1) If I'm working.
2) If I can get the parts to reliably run my truck by then.
3) If it's a "Jeeps only" thing, as my Jeep will be gone by the end of the week and I'll be bringing my F150.

To 80CJ yeah I made the trip, but the question is should I have?..
One of my tires is down to the wear bars so I want to swap it for one with great tread.  Should be done by trip time.

Buki, I've got a set of 235 R15 Toyo Open Country AT's mounted on cromies if you want to give them a go for this ride. 5 on 4.5 Better than Goodyear Wrangler GSA's.

Drop me a PM if you want to try them out.

More on the radio issue. In the past the club has utilized both CBs and FRS two way radios on the trail runs. However, on a few runs this year we have had safety issues due to lack of communications with two separate systems. I received some private messages form the more experienced members suggesting we should encourage all vehicles to use CB radios for added safety. If cost is an issue for a new CB then an option might be looking for a used handheld CB unit. One of the other website had a post indicating that used handheld CBs are fairly cheep at pawn shops. FRS radios are better than nothing but I think the trend is toward CBs only on Club runs. I think as a safety issue this is a good idea. I would suggest a used CB is a better investment if this jeep thing is going to be a habit. You also miss all of the jokes if you don’t have a CB. I will try to have a look around a few of the pawn shops in the north west part of Calgary and see if I find any used hand held CBs.

Does anyone have a spare hand held CB to lend to one of the new guys?

Filling the tank in Cochrane is more than enough fuel for this run.

Good on ya for taking on this impromptu trail cleaning  :)

i agree 10000000% that every run should be cb only. Things happen very quickly out there and even quicker when something goes horribly wrong. If the 4x4 in question is in a precarious position with FSR only and the guy behind him is the only one that can see him and has CB only, you can see how this would be a crappy position to be in trying to relay messages. What if a simple STOP needed to be translated immediately? By the time CB guy screams it and someone else with FSR translates it, it is too late. A 2 type communication sysytem is not ever a good idea.
OR
you could be like all my wheelin buddies that have NOTHING to communicate with but ............

Hey i'm in if the house sells and we don't have an open house this weekend. I know it would sound like that would be the perfect time to go but a pregnant wife with two large dogs isn't a good mix to leave behind to fend for themselves.

Now i too only have a FRS radio so what do we want to do with that rising situation?

But i do have a 00 TJ with 35's on a 4" susp. lift. and hopefully the "proper" winch plate coming in tomorrow so i can get my winch on. But the diffs are still open so i haven't been out much in her as to my nerveousness of breaking an axle on the stock 35 rear. Or just getting plain stuck with the opens.

Hope to meet you guys on Sat.

ok another quick question... Any CB radio will work and they will automatically tune in with everyone's that will be on the trail.? I have never used a cb, just a two way I priced some out at Circut City so I may just go buy one and end that dillema.

Most of the CBs I have seen in the club have from channel 1-40 as options. At the beginning of the run we have a drivers meeting and decide what channel to use. If anyone has a hand held unit with less channels then we would pick a cannel that works for them. Out of 14 or so runs I have been on in the last year I think we used channel 10 on each run. It seems to be a habit. If you are looking for a CB it does not have to be a fancy unit we are usually fairly close on the trail. There are two stores in Calgary that specialize in selling new units. If you have any questions about installing the unit ask online a few of the guys are good at offering suggestions.

CB channels are dedicated frequency for transmission and reception. All channels are tuned to the standardized specs regardless of make/model of CB.

The very first mod I did to my jeep was a cb

I didn't even ask about going on a run before it was installed

You can get them used through friends or co-workers, relatives and the internet

A cb is one of the cheapest and best mods u can do and it might mean the difference between driving off the trails or being draged off

A cb should be on the top of ur list ahead of lifts ,tires and even a winch

In my opinion

NO CB NO TRAIL RUN

Circut City so far is the cheapest ranging 79 to 139 which isnt to bad when you count your own safety. So the next question is whats the easiest way to install it or have it in your jeep I ride alot of times with the top down so it has to be quick removal so no one knicks it when I am not out on the trails. The radios in the work truck are permenantly installed and wired in. Any suggestions and maybe I can have this all organized before I get up there hehe

Yep it is still a go! August 19th. It will be a good place to start for a first run. The trail has an easy start, then over two log bridges, then a two river crossings, some ruts, a small clean up project and then back to a waterfall at the edge of the mountains. If we get done early enough then we might be able to make a side trip to Margaret Lake. Bring your lunch. Please make sure your vehicle meets the minimum requirements listed in the first post. As far as tools most of us carry a selection of tools in our jeeps for trail repairs. It is a good habit to get into.

I will be putting up a list of things we need for the clean up project closer to the run.

Hey, Roadking Truck Stop on Barlow Trail in Calgary has a Radio shop within it that has some great deals on CB radios. Apparently you can get a mobile CB for as low as $79.  I am sure the guy might have some used ones even cheaper... all you would then need is an attenna (which he also has there) and to do the install.

Sound like you are good to go. 8)

The more you go out on trail runs the more stuff you start to carry in your jeep. A good place to start is one of those all in one tool kits with sockets and wenches. They have lots of the basic tools and they store well so things are not rattling around. Next, I think a first aid kit is a good idea. This is going to be a fairly simple run and we hopefully won’t have any problems with the jeeps. It is important that you bring things for your own comfort, safety and anything that you think your jeep is likely to need.

On most runs I carry some tools, some extra fluids for the vehicle, a big container of water, lots of food, first aid kit, tow strap, fire extinguisher, extra change of clothes, maps, compass, small shovel and often my pit crew who are 4 and 7 years of age.     As this is a first time run for a few people we do not expect that everyone will have their jeeps packed with all this stuff. You just start adding things as you go on more runs.

At the beginning of the run we will have a drives meeting to go over some safety rules. I will talk about what kinds of things people should carry with them if they are going on more and harder runs.

As far as the trail clean up part of the run we will be disassembling an old utility trailer, haling the parts out and cleaning up the site.  Some of the things that will help with this project: work gloves, safety glasses, hack saw, hammers, pry bars, shovels, and garbage bags. It is important that anything you carry in your jeep should be secured down so it can’t hit you or your passengers on the rough parts of the trail or if you rolled the vehicle.  I am sure I will think of more things in the next two weeks. I am going out to look at the site this weekend and will have a better idea after that.

AND whats a good cost for every thing needed for min. requiremints (just a ball park).  I was also going to post in the wanted sec. for used things needed.  Please check me out there if you have anything you dont need anymore.  I want to be very prepared for anything.  Just cause I didnt need it last time, doesnt mean Im not gona this time.

I am glad you asked, ABSOLUTELY NOT

Tow points should be BOLTED to the frame with a minimum of grade 8 bolts.  The bumperettes are just thin steel and not nearly strong enough.

I'm going to go ahead and call a no-show on this one.

As I'm not a religious man, it's against my nature to believe in miracles.

And believe me, it would take a miracle for me to get my complete steering system, fuel tank, front suspension, tow points and CB done by the 19th.

Hopefully I'll see you guys around though. I'd still like to make it down and go for another trip with Ian, Dom, Gregg and the boys before they take ALL the wheeling away.

Take care,
Kris

Can you get pictures of the trailer, it will give people a better idea of what they're up against. If I do make this run, I'll bring the cordless sawzall along.

Blair, Bob, and I did a run out there last weekend. The trailer is nothing more than a frame now. Just a bunch of rusted out angle iron is all that is left. Sawzalls will make it a very easy project.

Hi

Sorry I have been off the forum. I have been away to the APEX Jeep Jamboree, what  blast. But that’s for another post.

The trailer clean up will be easy. We went and checked the site a week ago. Someone has removed the wooden body of the trailer, most likely for firewood. The axels are gone. All we need to do is make a couple of cuts in the frame of the trailer so we can fit it in the vehicles on the run and then we can hall it out. We have permission from the M.D. of Bighorn to drop it at the land fill site on Hwy 40 on our way out. The ease of the clean up will free up some time and we hopefully can show the new people Margaret Lake. If we have a few sawsalls then it will be quick work. As a long weekend has just passed it is hard to say what other garbage we may find along the way. I think it is in everyone’s best interest that we make an effort to show we care about the way the trail looks even if we have to stop and clean up the mess left by less responsible users.

If you can let me know who might have a sawsall that would be great. I will bring a couple of hacksaws as a back up. If we have a larger vehicle on the run we may not have to cut much.

I have received written conformation from SRD to go ahead with the small clean up project.  I hope all the new people are excited about comming out. :D  The trail will be easy, even for stock rigs, but it will get you into see some great scenery and meet a few of the club members.

Leaving Smitty’s Cochrane  8:30 Saturday August 19th.

If the PA ones don;t fit because they are TJ hooks, where can I get some front tow hooks?

Really.....I'd hate to miss this due to not knowing where to get front tow points (hooks or some kind of shackles I can get on there) for a YJ.  :(

Looks like the Liberty got through the Apex JJ unscathed, so I'll be there. Not got much in the way of tools, but I will have the back and rack of the Liberty for hauling stuff out.

Nothing, it's doing me no good in the garage. :)

If anyone wants to take it off my hands, I can bring it to the run on Sat. and you can all fight for it.

Edit: there's no mount or bracket with it, it just ends at the screw fitting. I think they're pretty cheap to pick up though.

I have one you can have for free.  It came in my rig and I haven't ever tried it because the antenae broke on the drive home.  If you want it you can pick it up from my place and hope it works when you get it home.  PM me if you're interested. ....Steve

Glad to hear you can make it. The trail is easy, my kids will not be making this trip as they are out of town, but I took them in to the falls a few weeks ago and they had a blast. Kids are always welcome on CJA runs. I will have the waver form for children with me if you decide to bring them.

Thanks

I'm not saying I'm in until I'm sure I get everything ready to go, as we are currently ripping the house apart for renovations.

Coming from Sylvan Lake.....where's the best place to gas up?

Most people gas up in Cochrane before breakfast.

If I was coming from Sylvan Lake, I think I would go down hwy 2, and take the Olds exit, Hwy 27 ?, then south on 22 to cremona, Gas up at the Petro-can. head south a few KM to hwy 579 to water valley. hwy 579 changes to gravel a little past water valley then keep going untill I hit Hwy40/734 then head south about 7 km's and meet us at the gravel pit at 9:30 ish. You would miss breaky at Smitty's, but you could probably sleep in for another hour. :)
If you left the gas station at Cremona at 8:30 ish that would put you at the gravel pit at about the same time as us.

Ok, I think Im ready.  One problem though!!  I cant seem to get my CB to work.  I am not getting any answers back when I say "TEST, can anybody hear me test".  Now is this the right lingo or am I on crack.
Everything looks like its working, but I dont know anything about CBs.  Now I know that this should probably be in the CBs thread but this one seems to be more active.  AND ITS DOWN TO THE WIRE!!!  Does any one have an extra hand held CB, or no where I can get one for REALLY CHEAP, and possibly take back, when I figure mine out???  Or perhaps will a 2 way radio work for this run ONLY, and I promise to either get a NEW CB or figure out what is wrong with mine!!!

Mike, I have another Cobra that you could use, only problem is I don't know if it would work or not, as it's second hand. I haven't had time to wire it in or not. Ended up mudding and sanding again this evening, having supper right now.

Good news is tow hooks, strap, and cb are ready for the run, just need put in the jeep.  I did manage to get the antenna mounted on the rear brake light bracket, though.

I'm having supper right now...I'll try to run out and test it out in a few minutes and let you know if it works or not, although if no one was on in your area to answer, you might not be getting and replies. ;)

Edited: Both seem to power up, but I seriously doubt I'd be getting any answers at 12:20 in the morning. I'll check them further tomorrow, and let you know if I have an extra for you.

Anyways...can someone tell me a good way to test a secondhand CB to make sure it is receiving? Thanks.

I think I will probably just do the Smitty's thing, as I'm sure the pit crew would enjoy that. Thanks for the directions, though....if I'm still sanding drywall at 7:00am I might have to use them.

Unless an act of god happens, I'm screwed.

*sigh*  I did my best.  I managed to catch Rocky Mountain Off-Road before closing to get a proper strap but no luck begging, borrowing or stealing a portable CB.  I've spent my evening trying to buy one in this town and no chance - Wal-Mart, Canadian Tire, Future Shop, Best Buy, even Peavey Mart and London Drugs.  I've been everywhere.  I did find one Cobra unit but no source of power as they didn't carry the charger.  That was after 20 minutes trying to get someone to unlock the glass case in the first place.

Anyone know a 24 hr truck stop in Calgary's west end or Cochrane area that might carry a handheld CB to sell RedDog at the crack of dawn?

Okay, I think I'm coming.  I really do.  Not sure, but I think I am.

Anyway, not an act of god, but rather an act of stupidity, as I realized that the pretty much stock ZJ I'm trying to sell has front tow hooks on it.  Not the YJ, but it will do.

Calibrated my CB, seemed to be fine.  Only problem is I have the same think as Buki....I can't hear anything on it.

How do I know it is working?

If anyone reads this before you leave tomoorow.  Please bring some extra bolts to front YJ tow hooks.  I have 2 good tow hooks but only one bolt.  I should have checked before I started wrenching, its really late 2:15 am.  I think Im over tired.  Im going to come out, Ill probably get sent back home.  BUT at least I tried.  I really REALLY tried!!  Even had CABLESMURF drill me a tow hook for the rear and bought a new CB.
Cable smurf kicks arse.  you all have been so super nice, I really appreciate all of everyones help.  Ihope to see you all tomorrow.  BUT its bed time.  Wait, who am I kidding I have to be up in 2.5 hours to leave, might as well stay up!!

Thanks man!  I was on the prowl at 4am and found them on the net, location map and all.  It looked perfect.  I fired off a CB inquiry but the email was returned as no such address.  I called and got cut off.  I called again and after being on hold forever, nobody could be found to deal with CB stock issues.  Obviously I wasn't going to drive from Red Neck Deer to SE Calgary at 4am with no absolute certainty of proceeded on to Cochrane for breakfast properly equipped.  Looks like it wasn't meant to be for this weekend.     I'll get this CB radio business sorted out and be set for next time.  It's the last missing component to full compliance for a run suitable for stockers.

Still have an itch for the road and the outdoors though.  Might truck on down to Drumheller and park myself on the back patio in the sun at the Rosedeer Hotel/Last Chance Saloon in Wayne if anyone's interested.  Silver '05 TJ in black soft top mode.
