which winch?
« on: March 05, 2009, 02:00:41 PM »
I'm thinking it's about time I get a winch, NSOR has the warn m8000 on for $725 which sounds like a good deal.  Is it overkill/underkill?  Most places I've called try and push the $1600 warns (9.5ti, m8274... which are nice but a little expensive).

I love the 8274s because they are an awesome winch, but the m8000 and an excellent winch for the price.  The m8000 has been around for a long time and it is still a great winch.  The only downfall with it, is that is only comes with either 80' or 100' of cable

For the price, I would not hesitate.  Or look at the classified because sometimes there are great deals on winches

Or a used 9.5ti for about the same price.
I followed a rainbow out to a garage and found a leprichaun. The rainbow ended in a potted cactus on his porch, but there was no gold :(

i use a xd9000 winch. worked awesome the one and only time i used it. then it just sat on the front of my jeep lookin good. just before winter i cleaned it up and gave it a shot. worked again without a hitch. warn is the way to go.
a few years ago i was wheeling in snow with some friends. i got stuck, one buddy tried pulling me out with a strap, he got stuck. budy number 3 pulled both of us through 2 feet of snow about 50 feet with his m8000 winch. same buddy a few weeks later dragged his jeep strapped to mine about 300 feet through snow. pulls were back to back as we would winch till we could hook to the next tree. but that m8000 never gave up.
M8000 for 725$ will be the best 725$ you will ever spend on your jeep:)

That superwinch looks pretty good.  I like the idea of the low profile as to not block airflow.  That and Princess auto is on the way home from work  ;D

Personally I prefer the M8.

For relatively the same cost, you get a winch that has cheap parts, and is twice as fast as all those off brands.

I sold my old winch on a buddy and it was cracked in a few places (my dog is overweight... that's why I got a 9000 now) ... buddy got parts and rebuild it all. It was surprisingly very cheap...

You could try the Titan Winches out:

http://titanwinches.webs.com/tw1010000lbwinch.htm

One of the members in our club has one and has been very happy with it so far.  Very decent pricing and seems to be a good quality unit. Lots of guys on Jeepkings have picked one up and love them. The owner Duncan also has a 12000lbs model with built in compressor. That will be my next winch.

Here's my $0.02

I don't pretend to have the same level of experience off-roading as some of the other folks here, but I've spent a lot of time winching one-ton trucks out of places they shouldn't have been in to start with  :o

Personally, I've only ever used Warn products. I've seen 12,000 pound Warn winches stand up to year after year of abuse in the oilpatch. I've even seen someone use a couple of bare wires stuck into the controller port on the winch to hot-wire the winch after the controller got destroyed (don't even bother asking about how that happened  >:()

I own a Warn, and would buy one again. I'm not saying that other brands aren't worth trying...but for my money, they're the brand that has earned my trust.

After all...I like hiking, but not enough to want to walk out.
I followed a rainbow out to a garage and found a leprichaun. The rainbow ended in a potted cactus on his porch, but there was no gold :(
