McLean Creek V-Days - Potential Projects
« on: June 02, 2005, 11:11:40 AM »
So, before I start listing some potential projects.

Here is a little reading material. Here is a one page pdf, that outlines some terms and some guidlines of working near water. Please read it.

So the projects this year are geared towards protecting the watershed, and maintaining fish habitat. There is no new bridges yet. But there are a bunch of culvert fixing, moving, creating drainage ditches, repairing and shoring up bridges.

I will put the basic blurb and location on some of the project below. There are a couple where the complexity and scope of the project is extremely large, a couple of them are going to be multiday projects as well, with semi-routine maintanence as the year progresses.
Also, and major materials (fencing, augers, fill, dozers) are provided.
The projects are numbered according to the master list. So they will not be in order.

Project #1 - Fencing Project - 20 bodies needed
Location - First Bridge south of Main Staging Area, west of pond.
Intall fencing to direct OHV traffic onto bridge desk and restrict water crossings on north and south sides. Install DFO/SRD signs, groom trail, cross-ditch trail  to direct rain run into the forest bed. Possible fencing to allow small hill on south side to regenerate.

Project #3A - Single Track Sign Repais - 2 bodies
Location - Priddis Trail
Reinstall Single Track trail sign

Project #3B - Water Diversion and Block Access - 8 bodies
Location - Priddis Trail
Block access and direct OHV traffic to stay on trail using trees and brush (cut as direct by SRD). Cross ditch problem area to return water to antural water path. Reinforce water path with log dam.

Project - #3C - Trail Sign Repair - 2 bodies
Location - Priddis Trail
Reinstall trail direction sign, face sign west to match trail.

These three can be done together, as they are in close poximity to each other.

Project #5 - Fencing Project/Water Diversion - 10 bodies
Location - Fish Creek Trail West Entrance
Install/repair fencing to direct OHV traffic onto bidrge desck and restrict water crossing from both sides. Install DFO/SRD signs. Cross ditch trail to redirect water flow into south riparian area. Reestablish dirt bank on east side of bridge.

Project #6 - Culvert Install and Trail Reconstruction - 20+ people or possibly two clubs
Location - Valley Trail (north end by Fish Creek Trail West)
Manual labour to drain water from large hole. Dog out 2 existing culverts. Install 3 new culverts to allow for water drainage. Use local material to reestablish trail grade. Plant willow bundles and grass to stabilize trail bank. Install SRD/DFO signs.
This is the little section that S-turns around the willows with the huge hole on the trail. This is going to be a big one, and will need periodic maintanence throughout the year to maintain the culverts and drainage basins.

Project #9A - Fencing Project - 8 bodies
Location - Fisher Trail West (Steel Bridge) near Widowmaker hill.
Install fencing and west and east side of bridge to direct OHV traffic onto bridge. Install SRD/DFO signs. Possible planting of greenery to stabilize bank. FISH BEARING STREAM!

Project #9B - Culvert Clean Out - 2+ bodies
Location - Fisher Trail West, east of steel bridge
Clean out both culverts to allow unrestricted water flow. Extreme caution, fish bearing stream, and depending on conditions, water flow my make removal of debris difficult.

So, take a look, and put your comments in this thread.
There is no such thing as not enough shovels, pick-axes, chainsaws, hammers. If you come, bring it!

Cheers
