bored trottle body
« on: October 05, 2009, 05:31:13 PM »
i have read a recent post on another site about boring your stock trottle body out to a 62 mm. my uncle has a big shop with all the tools and i was a machinist for a couple of years and dont think this is beyond my abilities at all. but i was wondering has any body else done this on here or am i being a pioneer? in the article that i read they used a drill press to bore it out but my uncle has a lathe and a mill so i would probly use them.

any advice would be greatly appreciated also what are your critiques?

I thought some throttle bodies had a little cone to them to give them a venturi effect and speed up the air going in. But I could be full of turds too. If you're going to do it use the lathe.

It's not really worth the effort on a stock engine Dana. Invest money and time elsewhere. Marginal single-digit gains will be achieved if any at all. It would help on an engine that had other enhancements done to it  ie. - CAI, spacer, header, exhaust ,chip, etc.

i have the new style intake which i am cleaning up right now to install at the same time as i bore the throttle body out and with the mill i can make a spacer for it as well, but will the spacer even help when i go to the bigger intake?

Spacers don't really have any effect on a MPI engine except for improved throttle response.  As stated above not worth the effort or money.  I have one on my Jeep and no really change.  Now caburated and TBI engines are a different story

Why don't you buy an aftermarket header while you're at it? Intake is coming off , and now would be a good time to do it. Stock manifold usually cracks anyway. Kill two birds...

so, if you bore throttle body out to 62mm, what do you plan on using as a butterfly? im thinkin you might have a gap to fill. use trevors brain. it should just fit... ;)

actually the artical that i read says that there is a narrowing part below the butterfly that can be bored out to 62mm i think that the butterfly is already at 62mm you just have to remove the restriction that brings it down to 52mm. i need to reread the article and se if i really want to do this.

No it wouldn't... there would be enough of a gap you could fit your pecker through... asshat. ;)
