4 year rod knock finally calls it quits
« on: May 25, 2016, 10:09:11 AM »
The mild rod knock in the old YJ has finally gotten to the point of no return. Camped at Mclean this weekend the knock got worse and worse every time we went up top of the world. Finally I had to shut it down hoping I could still get it home.

Sure enough, the old beast made it all the way to my house with a violent knock and no oil pressure under 2000 rpm. The last time a blew a motor with a knock, the rod blew out the side of the block after about 5 minutes of knocking. The fact that this thing went 4 years with a knock really speaks to the durability of the old 4.0. Specially considering its had me on the pedal for the last few. haha

Motor swap coming up.

Thanks Kev for hooking me up with the donor.

Ya it was sounding pretty gnarly on the trail! Thankfully the rod didn't come through the side of the block. I've had that happen before!

Haha, yeah, me too. But just with chevy's...............

This thing has proven itself to be resilient enough to be worthy of a stroker build.

Please tell you did or are planning on redlining it to see how long it takes to put a window or two in the block.

Could make it interesting to have a blow-up at the Show & Shine

The thought crossed my mind, but I figured getting me all the way home with that hard of a knock earned that motor the right to a rebuild...lol

No, no, no, just mount a pair of Go-Pro's on either side of the rad pointing rearwards with a view directly down each side of the block and bet which side opens up first.

It definitely had a good run.  There is a video somewhere of me climbing an icy hill a couple years back with the throttle just pinned in about second gear.  It was knocking back then as well.  Tough as nails.
