Blinker Mod
« on: August 29, 2006, 06:35:48 AM »
Anyone do the blinker-relay mod as per http://www.stu-offroad.com/electrical/led1/led-4.htm ??

I was at B&E, picked up a similar relay, with different pinout.

I got my flashers to flash normally (say that three times fast).
But the dash indicator for the arrows comes on when I turn on my lights. As if to tell me I have a bulb out.

Can anyone verify this behaviour? Or have I mis-soldered something?

Cheers
Chris

Do you have a part number and location where I can get this said flasher?

And does it work in an 01 and newer tj? With the integrated relay/flasher module?

Thanks

Interesting. Probably not seeing the correct resistance. We get this all the time on motorcycles that have removed the stock signals for LEDs.

t's a simple fix, wire in some resistors. Depending on the stock bulb wattage, a 20W-8ohm resistor (or a series pair of 10W-4ohm) resistors wired in parrallel to the LEDs should do the trick. Assuming about a 27W max load (1157 stock bulb). Use your Ohm/Watt's laws from high school to figure out the proper resistor for a different load.

Of course, a HD flasher is a lot less work if you can find one!  :D

Don't put in the resistors they add heat and currunt draw to the system

I did my led install and flasher mod on Sunday and everything works just like stock

I don't think there is a flasher avalible for the 2001 and up tj to correct for Led lights

Chris

Sounds like u mis-soldered something

this is the link for the flasher mod that I followed

Where did you get the relay Steve? I have tried to find it at RS but they told me they didn't carry it anymore.

After asking the sparky at work, I have mis-soldered mine.

I got mine at B&E on Manitou Road 24VDC/3A SPDT, 15.7mm x 10.9 mm x 12mm, three bucks something.

I have the pinout and schematic to solder it up, for those who couldn't read a circuit diagram (ie me).

About to re-solder now, I'll let you know how it goes.

Cheers

Not sure, the datasheet doesn't tell me, or I don't know how to read it.
The relay says 12VDC, 3A 125VAC

The method I'm using is the same across both links above, same pictures and writeup, just different sites.
OK, I'm not a circuit analysis kinda guy, here is a ghetto schematic of the relay, how would I wire it up???

          -------------
pin#1 |o --     --o| pin #2
          |       /      |
          |      |       |
pin #3 |o--coil---o| pin#4
          |      |       |
          |      |       |
          |      |       |
pin #5 |o ------- o| pin#6
           -------------

Dang forum software is not making my spaces into spaces, anyways the schematic is on the link. I'm sure you can figure it out.

I had ign to pin #3
pin#4 jumped to pin#2
pin#2 to ground
ping #6 to sw

And I get normal flash frequency, but on dash indicators lit.

Datasheet is here http://www.songchuan.com/PPDF/842.PDF
regular 842 type

Thanks
Chris

You guys sure make a lot of work for yourself...  buy this, buy that, solder this, etc

Just buy the led flasher and plug it in. Took me 1 minute. Done.

As far as I know, there is no off the shelf LED flasher for the newer TJ's

I should have kept the box. Cost like $15 bucks

Its a blue module that plugs into the flasher socket.
