2.5 tbi problems on highway
« on: March 24, 2007, 05:37:23 PM »
Need some help here please!

I've got a 2.5 tbi in a 86' MJ that was running just fine (was).
I took it on the highway the other day (10-15deg C) and
about 35 minutes into my trip it started to overheat.  At the
same time I noticed there was smoke coming from the truck.
After pulling over i opened the hood and 2 major things were
going on.  There was oil sprayed around the passenger side
of the engine, as well, the radiator fluid was boiling over and
venting out the reservoir.  After letting it cool down I added a
litre of oil (couldn't really tell if it was down cause it was really clean)
and drove it back to Suffield.  The radiator fluid had gone from
max in the reserve to the min line.  It ran fine the 6 or 7 miles
I drove it.  I was only doing 60 kph.

All this aside, there is no oil in the cooling fluid and no cooling
fluid in the oil.  There was no idiot lights on and no odd sounds
coming from the Jeep when I shut it off.  It also ran fine on the
way back to Suffield.

Any ideas?  Mabey thermostat and cracked oil boss?  Pretty remote
to have two problems at the same time, my luck and all.  I have heard
that the MJ had a tendancy to overheat at highway speeds but the
temp was pretty low.

I have not seen it since because I was on my way to work and
had to have it towed fron Suffield to the Hat.

thanks for the help/ideas
