Road Closure

Road Closure
Due to poor spring weather, the work to finish the bypass road around Camp Chamisol has not been completed. Equipment that had been slated for this work was still geared up for sanding and snowplowing. The Waiparous Valley Road will remain closed for the May Long Weekend and until the work is completed. Please post the advisory from Alberta Transportation on your web pages so people can plan not to go random camping in the Waiparous Valley this coming weekend. Once the weather improves and ground conditions permit, Transportation will finish the road.

Washouts close Waiparous Valley Road until further notice

Waiparous... Motorists are advised that the Waiparous Valley Road is closed until further notice from the intersection with Mockingbird Lookout Road in the North Ghost Recreation Area.

The closure is due to washed out sections between Camp Howard and Camp Chamisol.

Motorists should use caution in the area and obey all signs. Further advisories will be issued should conditions change.

The SRD site still says the road is closed???

Is further work planned?

The volenters finished their part of clearing the trees from the by-pass. The minerstry of transportation was to com in and complete the road. The last time I had checked with ASRD transport had not completed it yet.

The Travel Advisory below is to be posted on the ASRD web site. The Waiparous Valley Road is open but it is recommended only for 4x4 use. Some sections have not been graveled. As it is now a public road and there are restrictions in place regarding use of unlicensed OHV on the road.  Thanks to the other volenters that helped with this project.

Travellers’ Advisory

Waiparous Valley Road reopens to public travel

As a result of combined efforts by Alberta Sustainable Resource Development, Alberta Transportation and numerous volunteers, the Waiparous Valley Road is open again for public travel. Drivers are advised to use caution, particularly in bad weather, as some sections still require improvements and may be slippery.

Visitors to the area are reminded that travel by off-highway vehicle travel is not permitted on Waiparous Valley Road. Off-highway vehicles can be operated in the designated area west of Intersection 123. Restrictions on off-highway vehicles will be strictly enforced.

Those travelling to the Ghost Waiparous Recreation area are also advised that a No Camping/No Open Fire Zone has been created between the bridge on Hidden Creek and Intersection 123 and to obey all signs in the area.

Waiparous Valley Road is located west of Calgary. It was closed from the Mockingbird Lookout Road intersection in the North Ghost Recreation Area due to washed out sections between Camp Howard and Camp Chamisol.

For detailed information on OHV Designated Trails, No Camping/No Open Fire Zones and further regulations in the Ghost Forest Land Use Zone, see:

Yes we can use it. Its a road. Because it is a road the quads and unlicensed vehicles can not.  Different kind of OHV.
