Flush the rad with a garden hose and lots of water through the fins.....if you have AC it could be plugged between condensor and rad......shine a light from behind ...if you can't see it, it's packed with mud.

-Electric fans or clutch fan? Possibly burnt out if they were spinning when it went in
-Check the cooling system that it holds pressure?
-How does it run when it gets hot?(Coughs and sputters?)
-Have you checked oil and coolant for potential mixing? (head gaskett?)
-Fuel Pressure? Lean makes it run HOT

A few places to start looking

Is the clutch fan functioning properly ??? Hot it should be hard to turn by hand...if it spins easily it's pooched.
Thermostat ???  possibly stuck or not fully opening...swap it out with a new one if in doubt.

How bout the exhaust.still have cat(s) in place ( a plugged cat will have similar symptoms).....to check fuel pressure , it has to be done on injector rail...there will be a small cap with a schrader valve ( similar to what is on ur tires)  You need a gauge that will thread on to this fitting ( 30-40 psi at idle is about the norm) not 100% sure on 5.2  :-[

let us know how it turns out and what you think or found to have caused the problem. I got the same deal going on with mine, after she had a couple hour soak in the tub.

If its gutless and sputtering while running hot i would check to see if you have a ballast resistor on the fuel pump. I ran into a simular issue on the XJ. Temp comes up, truck runs like crap, temp wont come down. The ballast resistor takes your 12V system to 9V to make your pump quiet which was a complaint in the past,.. when they crack the voltage drop which give low pressure forcing a lean scenario. Lean equals Hot! The hotter the engine bay the worse it gets,..  just an idea from my past,..
