soi just picked up a new to YJ, and it currently has a 4" pro comp suspension lift in it. first off, it rides really rough; even rougher that 'well it rides like a jeep rough' the lift is older, but ikn ow the front leafs are new. i don't really know if its the springs, or shocks or what. shocks are firm though (also procomp 3000s or something) so what i'm going to do for now, is add some lift shackles, and regrease the bushings as i have a feeling that might be a partial cause. i guess my question is, if this doesn't solve the rough ride, what would be a softer spring option? i was/still am thinking of going to rubicon express stuff, and their monotube shocks. any ideas/suggestions? i've been in the 'YJ game' for about 5 hours now...... lol yes i know i'm getting antsy!
thanks
John

I say suck it up :D :o ;D
YJ's are just a bouncy rough riding mobile.
My YJ 'was' stock and it was a rough ride.
-
Told you that you should have bought my TJ.... princess... :-*
-
bwahahaha, fair enough Trevorbut this was a lil' cheaper, and when i break it i won't care as much cause it ain't as pretty lol
-
It probably rides rough because of the Procomp leafs. Put in some OME or RE leafs and it should be softer ride. Disconnect the sway bar and it will ride a lot smoother.
-
If you want the 2-3" range of lift then get the OME kit, they ride BETTER than stock. Procomp is procrap on a YJ especially with the 3000s shocks. I have heard people getting a better ride by switching to a better shock. I have heard RE makes a got setup and a lot of people like the BDS lifts because of price, quality and warranty. Alcan makes custom springs and then are excellent but you pay for them.
Also look at getting the MORE boom shackles front and rear. They allow for lots of movement in the rear and prevent shackle inversion in the front. Plus they are greaseable and are 5/8" lift
-
well, lift is pro comp for sure, and shocks are the 3000s... there is no shackle lift on it either, and from the feel of it, the shackle bolts are really tight. i was thinking of going with 4" Rubicon Express leafs and their monotube shocks as well as their rear boom shackles (and front shackles also, not boom shackles though) figure it'll ride a bunch better, and hopefully flex nicely too.....
-
front shackles also, not boom shackles though
I would recommend the booms, as they prevent shackle inversion and I have seen the regular shackles invert. Just mount them opposite of the rear
-
try letting some air out of your tires ...
-
thanks for advice on teh boom shackles. i'll try that, why not? as for letting air out of the tires, i can try it also, but they are riding at 30 psi right now. doesn't seem to high
-
Make sure the shakles aren't over torqued.
Just another thought .... when you are offroad, you may want to consider removing the shocks completely, or at least disconnecting them at the lower mount.
-
RE springs are pretty stiff.
OME, BDS, or Alcan are your choices for softer springs.
Rancho 9000's dialed all the way soft, are an affordable choice for shocks.
Boomerang shackles are a must on a YJ. MORE makes the best/beefiest off the shelf ones out there.
-
I am running a procomp since '93 , the other suggestions are good, till you decide drop
your air pressure , 30 to much for me am around 26psi - you'll have to find what works
for you - if they're hard its really bone jaring - still rides like a wheel barrel but a bit better ...
I am due for a shock change soon - will check out those ranchos ...
-
what everyone else has said is 100% true. procomp is cheap and they ride stiff. try rancho 9000 adjustables. then you can tune your ride for the conditions. another thing i did years ago, was i removed my front track bar, rear track bar, and front sway bar. i wish i kept my sway bar, but i dont miss the track bars. this is not the best idea if you're on the highway all the time. cause it doesnt handle as sharply as before. but the ride is way better, and it flexes better too. i have rancho 2.5" leaf springs and they seem pretty smooth riding. i dont recommend taking off the track bars to anyone, but try it out. i got used to the handling quirks. anyways, just my 2 cents.
-
thanks for all the responses guys! i will be ordering shackles and some shocks tomorrow. i think, i'll do this first, and if i don't like the ride, i'll spring for, ummm, new springs haha.
oh, and ya track bars are off allready, and sway bar has discos, so ya i can feel the 'quirks' on the highway, its cool though

I could not stand my Jeep without a front trackbar, just did not like it, so I got one of the jks telescoping trackbars and it works pretty good. I lost the rear a long time ago
-
here's the flex I get with the procomp, the tires just kiss the org flares --- rest is upto the driver --- I mean locker , I recently did some measurements and it settled 1/2in on drivers side in 15yrs ...
- no rear trac bar
- front trac bar in
- front sway disco'ed
- 3000 shocks - drivers side needs replacing with worn bushings etc

edit - added 15yrs part

well to update. i ordered some 36" iroks from modern, as well as some Rubicon express 4" leafs and 1" shackles, and will run rubicon monotube shocks. i think it'll be a good setup
-
You gonna be good to go for Sat Johnny?
-
not looking like it trev, i'm not CJA trail rule compatible at teh moment lol. tires and lift are not in.... even if i got them i donno if i'd get it all installed in time. PLUS i'm winchless and i'm without towpoints up front right now. have the hooks, need longer bolts to go through the winch plate/hook into the bumper (anyone knows what kind to get i'm all ears) jeep needs some work before i get it on the trail i'm afraid.
however, I might be able to ride shotty.......

Bolt Supply just off MacLeod Tr by the 'Yota dealership. Thats where I get all my grade 8 stuff

just an update on this: swapped out my procomp lift for Rubicon express. it rides a lot nice now, however i think the problem was in the shackles not the springs. the shackles were so tight i needed a breaker bar (good ole' highlift handle) to break them: i did not even need a breaker bar on the ubolts...... so i think that was my problem. however for future use, i'm thinking of going back to a tracbar...... steerings not bad, but its not great

I was the same way and did not like the feeling of driving without a trackbar. Have a look at the JKS telescoping trackbar, it is a good product and I like it.
