Title: NOISE FROM REAREND
Post by: YJALY on October 20, 2008, 10:39:22 PM
I HAVE A 95 YJ WITH A DANA 35, 4:10 GEARS AND AN ARB AIR LOCKER. I JUST PULLED THE REAR COVER AND NOTICED THE PINON GEARS HAVE BEEN WEARING ON THE DIFFERENTIAL CASE ON OTHERSIDE OF RING GEAR. IM THINKING THE PINON GEAR NEEDS TO BE RESHIMED? THERE WAS JUST MINOR NOISE, THE MARKS ARE VERY SHALLOW, THERE APPEARS TO BE NO DAMAGE TO ANY OF THE GEARS AND OIL WAS CLEAN. ANYONE HAVE IDEAS?

Your carrier bearings are probably shot.

I have a complete d35 with super arb, 2 sets of chromo 30 spline shafts, 4.88s, disk brakes, arb cover and trussed for 500$ if you want to upgrade.

Easy swap on a YJ.

I have a matching front 30 as well.

i wonder if a previous owner had a problem in the rear-end to cause thpinion to hit the case? did you install the arb?

Nope previous owner had no problems with it.  I bought it from black yj and installed it in the jeep.  I never saw any metal in the oil when changing it...  Nice to see you on the website Aly.  Does anyone know who can fix up this axle up for her, for a good price?  I believe the axle is out of the jeep.

The pinion nut has probably backed off. If the axle is out, I can look at it next week. I have no room for vehicles right not.

If this is my old diff, the pinion did have to be ground to fit the ARB which was done as per ARBs instructions, so it was a tight fit to begin with.  So if the pinion nut has loosened off it would not surprise me that it is hitting the case.

Axel is still in the jeep. Dropped drive shaft and there was lots of play in yoke in all directions and axel nut seems loose. will just tightening nut solve problems?

A new nut and some loctite will help to ensure it doesnt loosen again. To really be done properly, the crush sleeve shoud be replaced as well.

Get Tyler to buy an new nut. And bring it by my place of employment. We have a torque wrench that will do that.  He can leave the rear driveshaft off.  Until you have time to get a new crush sleeve..
