Title: Halloween Weekend - Waiporous or Mclean Creek
Post by: Matt4x4 on October 25, 2008, 06:12:32 PM
Hey I want to take my Heep out for a run, either the Saturday or the Sunday either Mclean Creek or Waiporous.
Did it alone before and paid the price     :-[      so I would like to go out with someone
Bone stock black 2000 XJ 4 door
What do I need to buy to be prepared to go out for a run?
I will definately buy a CB Radio, have the stock tow hooks front and rear.

Alright so for now lets make it Saturday, Mclean Creek. I have a stock Cherokee as well, and I don't know mclean to well. Is 10am a good time to meet at the store?

That sounds ok by me - Saturday, 10 am at the store. The weather looks dandy too.

Channel 10?

Things I keep in the truck while wheeling:
shovel
tow straps
come-along (hand winch)
gas can
toolkit
7gal air tank (for re-airing tires afterwards)
small saw

Princess Auto can get you all of those for unbelievably cheap.

I might be in for this trip. It's no Jeep though!

I did indeed. My concern is not so much for what my rig can do (locked front and rear on 32's), but more for the number of boggy/ugly spots in the run. Fisher west, top of the world...stuff like that would be just fine. Rocky/steep/technical/river crossings...that's all good. I'd just prefer to stay away from things that leave us winching/shovelling/using tow straps frequently.

Not to say that I'm averse to those runs every now and then, but not this time out.

From the bit of Maclean I saw last weekend, the water isn't too deep and the bottom is nice and firm - not too slippery.

I went out yesterday just to check it out, I messed around that open field thats off the gravel road. I think it will be fun this weekend.

I'm still on. Is there a fire ring or pit anywhere for lunch break? I'd bring Juicey-Jumbo franks, buns, mustard and diced onions for everyone if there was.

Now that it's all fixed, just *have* to test it out :)

Too bad we didn't meet up when we were in Canmore for a week relaxing a couple of weeks ago.

Yes, some sort of loose head count is kind of important food wise.

I'll be in Calgary early Saturday and will hit maybe the Safeway at Dalhousie if I have some idea of numbers, say by 10 pm tonight.

Where and when are we planning on meeting? If it's McLean, 9 at the store works well. For Waiparous, 9 at Smitty's in Cochrane works.

I thought we arrived at 10 am on the previous page. The suns not even up until after 8 now.

Thing is, there's this girl see. Based on the previous page I was to pick her up at 9 off McKnight and Centre Street, then we would head to McLean. She's in transit in the USA and I can't even reach her to change the time now. We'd be lucky to be there by 9:45 at best.

I'll be in, if you don't mind a non-jeep in your midst. No CB, I'm afraid.

Where is the store? Is that the gas station in Bragg Creek?

If anyone is bringing communal food you needn't count my truck of three towards the head count, though the thought is appreciated.

Top up in Bragg Creek and then head south on 22 and west on 66. No more than five minutes from Bragg Creek.

Get outta here on food. I said I would bring it if I can only get there on time.

My bad...I didn't see the 10 AM thing from that page. Ten will work for me. Last thing  I want is for my lack of reading comprehension to bugger with your romantic plans  ;)

Ya it is going to be 10am at the Mclean Creek store.

I take mcleod trail south to 22x west then go all the way past Bragg Creek, past the Forest Ranger Info Center and past Horizon Camp then you will see a sign for mclean creek which tells you to turn left. There is a store a couple minutes from the turn. Food will be good, I will bring a case of pop. I have also done the highway 8 westhills way, that round-about is kind of cool.

I went to Princess Auto today and picked up a shovel, tree saver, recovery strap (without metal), some shackles, and a hitch hook. I am bringing a friend who has a Hi-Lift jack. I also bought a 32km range CB walkie-talkie from Best Buy for 50 bux. Hopefully my new XM radio will work out there, I bought the cheap $15 unit just to check it out.

This is open to everyone even non-jeepers, I haven't bought a membership yet, but I plan to. I've been just way to busy lately and missed the last 2 months meeting.

Guys / gals, I'm so sorry. The "girl" deal got the best of me. I was driving around Calgary at sunrise looking for her with a cooler full of Juicy Jumbo franks for all as promised. A point was reached when there's no way I could have made the store on time. I apologize. I drove 90 minutes back home in disgust - and am apparently set for hot dogs half the winter.

Next time I'll forget the girl part and just show up on my own. It seems to work better that way.
