Title: Traffic Signs - Parking wanted
Post by: Tinkerer on November 27, 2008, 06:08:25 PM
Does anyone have or know where I can get signs with posts etc. to put up marking my private driveway indicating that vehicles will be towed that park in front of my driveway?  I have had the last straw with my next door neighbor whose visitors regularly block our driveway whether there are vehicles in the spots or not.  They obviously need to be pictographs since they will claim they don't speak English well enough if push comes to shove.

They are too arrogant, lazy, self centred and rude to walk across the street from where there is *AMPLE* parking at pretty much all times of the day and instead park in front of my driveway.

To add insult to injury, some of the newer parking control guys have argued whether my driveways are considered driveways or not under the law!!!   Hmm, they are cut out, they are gravelled, they definitely show signs of use and sometimes even have vehicles in them when someone parks there, so I want signs to remove *ANY* doubt anyone may have that the parker didn't realize there is a driveway there.

Hmm... anyone willing to bring over one or more massive rocks to put on the city property next to the curb so they can't open their door if they park at the curb?  I wonder if concrete posts on the property to "protect my tree from errant vehicles sliding on the ice" would get me in trouble  ;D

Ooh, even better, complain about people passing and speeding on the street and that I want those "islands" put in  ::)

Thanks for any help you can provide.... that's legal of course.... ramming them with my ARB kinda crosses the line and might scratch the powdercoat.

Report them to bylaw... depending on the officer that shows up they'll get a warning, ticket or towed.  ;)

If their car is not to big - Which & Snatch block and drag it into the centre of the road and leave it there.
Is the offending neighbours lot is next to the drive? If yes let them block it and just drive over his lawn to get out.

If you've asked them repeatedly.....

Wait until -38.....take your garden hose out, and turn it on very gently.  Voila!  Car-sicle.

Toothpaste on the door handles.

Start parking an old moutain bike there.  When you come home and find the bike moved and the car parked in its place, lean the bike back up against the car.

Park  a vehicle right in front, and one right behind.....preferably just before you know they are going to go to work.

Paint the windshield with cornstarch and water.

Deflate a tire halfway.....repeatedly, and never the same tire.  Leave enough air to drive to the local service station.

This used to happen to me all the time. I had a bunch of idiot students living across the street from me and every friday and saturday night they would park in front of my driveway. I just called the police every time and had them ticketed and towed. If they parked there a second time I would do a massive burnout in my gravel driveway and beat the hell out of the side of the car with gravel. If the cops asked what happened to the gravel I just told them I was trying to back out around the car and spun out.

If the cars are parked more then 24 hours in front of your house then you can get them ticketed and then they can be towed. You also have the right to access your driveway and if a car is in the way and it gets hit trying to access your driveway then you may not be responsible for damages esp when trying to drive out. ;D

Just be prepared for your own vehicle not to be there if you decide to use that parking spot for more than 24 hours.

Tinkerer, I'm curious if you have alley access or not. If you do then a front drive parking area might not be all that legal. Just because someone parks on thier front yard, doesn't make it a legal driveway. If you are going to push the issue for a driveway and have it posted, just like someone above posted, you'll be getting tagged and towed as well if you park there.

We have back alley access and many people in my neighborhood have driveways. It must depend on your neighborhood's zoning? I'd give the city a call, make sure you're legal and then call the police to tow them. This way you have a record of offenses when you get the city to put up the sign for you - I'm pretty sure you can get fined for putting up traffic signs yourself, even on your own property. If you were posting up a handmade sign that asked people not to park in the driveway, I'm sure that'd be different but it sounds like you want something more official looking. That way keeps your nose clean in any 'uncertainties'

And Pine trees falling on the vehicle will have to come of your house insurance - just happened to someone I work with.

i have a gravel front driveway with proper cut drive entrance. i also have 2.5 car garage off back alley.
My driveway is legal but i can not legally park RV trailer or motorhome in it for greater than 24hrs, than 48 hrs street, than 48 hrs somewhere legal, etc.

I had a neighbor that liked to block the front of my driveway......... Then I bought my son some hard street hockey pucks for practicing on the street, a couple of dents later and he has not left his rice rocket there again ;D
