Title: YJ 4x4 disengage
Post by: JackstandJohnny on December 13, 2008, 02:57:59 PM
so this kind of happened on the last day of Mclean. when i came home jeepers wouldn't shift out of 4x4, but the shifter was in 2wd.  i've driven it a few times and last night, i'm pretty sure it was in 4wd as the light was on, and it was pullin good in the snow.   but, i can't pull it out of 4x4, so, any ideas?
its my 91YJ, tcase is the 231, and its got the vacuum disconnect which i don't know much about

thanks guys

i was waiting for someone to post on this. as ive owned my YJ for over 6 years, and i am from winnipeg. and when it gets cold in winnipeg... 4x4 things dont always work the way you'd like them to! what i had problems with is they get slow to engage and disengage whe nthey are cold. usually i pull the lever in and out. and varying the rpm changes the vacuum which controls the unit and which also helps dis-engage the CAD system. also, if you had problems when it wasnt so cold there could be a shift fork issue whcih is very common. they are made of alumininium and they crack, whcih causes them to slide kinda half-assed on the axle. so might wanna start lookin for a new fork too, if you havent changed it in a while. but yeah, cold weather has been my issue for a few years now. good luck man;)

shift forks? sounds feasible, guess i'll check it out.  it wasn't overly cold when it got stuck though. i guess i just have to crawl under and investigate!
