Title: insurance adjusters on jeeps???
Post by: hps4evr on December 27, 2008, 07:30:52 PM
so i always knew my jeep would meet its demise by and elderly person in a mini-van... sure enough, today in a safeway parking lot, i had the right of way, and he wasnt even looking.
so how do insurance companies look at older jeeps with 260,000kms on the ticker? its a bent fender, cracked/twisted aftermarket flare, , leaf srping, leaf spring mount, and some unseen damage?
is this thing a write off? it works fine, needs a fender, flare, aftermarket leaf pack, straighten the mount. or should i take any thing of value off and let the adjuster have his way with it?
i havent been in an accident in 10 years. first one in alberta. andi had the right of way. even the other guy said so in his statement.

what d oyuo all think?
maybe this is a good thing as i can order that brand new JK Rubi!
happy new year all!!!

if it is a write-off, isn't it possible to buy it back?
I don't think they would write off your beast, buddy.

Maybe if they do, I can finally sell my TJ to someone who would build it up goooooood!!   ;D

If you decide that you are going to get a TJ let me know there are several up hear on the lots for sale and they are not a big seller so you should get a good deal.

with my YJ, they will write it off if the damage is 80% of the vehicle value.  the adjuster looked at the local listings, and then added 500$.  i think for the add ons it was: 200$ for custom bumpers, 500$ for hard doors, 80$ for cd player, etc,.  this was about 5 yrs ago, with a 93 yj with 210k, 4L 5 spd, tub was damaged so it was a write off.  too purchase it back, they sent it to auction, and if you matched the winning bid (which was 1800), you could buy it back. caution though, if it is a write off, it is very difficult to get it back on the road.  i'm sure different insurance companies have different policies.  this was for ama

thats some good info to keep in mind. im thinkin i might strip all the good parts off it and either sell them or add them to a TJ i may end up buying. then again, i do work at a dodge dealer so buying a new jeep is really easy too;) and if i did buy any TJ of JK it would be a rubicon. sorry guys, its the only way to go these days in my opinion.

sorry to hear what happened with it.  i had my 95 ZJ jacked a few years ago (bone stock though)  they were going to instantly write it of cause it was stolen.  and they'd give me 3k.   i wasn't impressed.  i would ask the guy what the jeep would be worth stock, and its not much, strip it of the goodies and sell em.

sorry to hear about the bad parking lot driving. i almost drove over a cavalier one year in my ford cause he was texting and drove down the middle of a parking lot and didn't bother to move to HIS side of the road. drove right up to his windshield..... got out, looked at his car and said 'well i won' hehe
good luck with it

Sorry to hear about the bad luck bud. When I had my Olds written off, I just told the insurance company that I wanted it for parts and they reduced the amount of my settlement by some money and let me keep the car. No auction for me, so you'll have to see what your insurance company's policy is. And if you want something off the vehicle work with the adjuster or take it off before you get it adjusted because you can get in a lot of %^&$ if the insurance company pays you for something and you remove it afterwards.

thanks for the info folks. after a sleepless night i kinda figure no matter what im going to get money out of this. it wasnt my fault, and the other guy even said so. but, i dont want it written off. a new fender, a flare, a new leaf pack is easy for me to come by. so i may do my best to make a deal with the insurance company. maybe they'll tell me how cool my jeep is and give me a million dollars...;)

Crappy deal.  The best thing to do is let the appraiser quote the repairs, which are based on what they/body shops buy parts for + the standard labour charge.  If the repairs are more than 70 -80% of the value, then they will write it off and give you a cheque for the appraised value.  You have the right to buy it back or "retain salvage" usually 15 - 20% of the appraised value.

Most adjusters determine value by looking at vehicles either on line or in the "handbook" they have.  They add or decrease the value based on KM's, condition etc.  Hope this helps, if not, call me & I'll try to explain it better.

Insurance price for stock 1994 YJ w/ 6cyl & 260k:
Retail - 3200.00
Wholesale - 2025.00

pretty good chance they will write it off.
Remove any aftermarket goodies and stereo before the adjuster sees it.
Only saving grace is the buy-back could be under $1000.00
Putting it back on the road would require it to be certified, I think it costs about $500.00
