ok i just put a new tranny in my truck ( 97 jeep grand cherokee) and now it won't start on the top of the bell housing on the old tranny there was a hole where this black senser thing went the new one dosn't have it so i left it off to the side chould this be the thing not allowing my truck to start.
-
Yep sounds like your crank position sensor is not hooked up if its not then it wont start.
-
That would be the crank position sensor I'm betting... without it... your jeep won't start. That's the same issue I'm having with my XJ right now I think. The CPS is bad and the engine just dies... or occasionally won't start.
-
No fug yours doesn’t work because you made fun of XJ’s

You mean it has nothing to do with the 340,000 km on it?
-
yea thats what i think it is too but there is no hole for it, do i need to make one and if i do where do i make it wright on top or can i put it to the side.
-
If possible you need to swap bellhousings.
You can try and rig the hole, but the placement of the sensor is critical. If its off an 8th of an inch it can throw your timing out badly, and tear up the motor.
Essentially, that sensor and the cam position sensor do the job that the distributer did in the old days. Set the ignition timing. If the comp cant see the signal, no spark.

what tranny did you have? what tranny did you put in there? what years are both trannys?

i took out my 42re out of my 97 grand cherokee and put in a rebuilt one from quality transmission i think i'm going to take a real good look at it today maybe there is a hole i just missed
-
i wonder if the 42re you got was from a newer jeep that didnt have the crank sensor on the belhousing. if you have your old transmission maybe sit them side by side and look for any differences.
-
If it's the wrong one, I'd suggest asking for a nice deal on your next one, for your time and effort in putting this one in and taking it out again, all for nothing.

i don't think it's a newer one just because of how nicly it bolted up it went in really nice so i new some thing was going to go wrong.

the newer version may not have the cps in that location. the newer engines used a signal from the sensor located in the spot a distributor would go. but they went away from distributors at a certain point. cant rmemeber what year. so this trans will botl up perfect, except it doesnt have the provisions for the sensor. just like the newer WJ transfer case doesnt have the usual speedo sensor on the tail housing of the t-case. the use wheel speed sensors at each wheel. give them a call and remind them of whats going on. they may have made an oops. i hope they compensate you with the proper transmission and a discount.
