Title: (HELP)1980 cj7 how to tell if the volt meter is shot or if it is somthing else?
Post by: bdron on March 02, 2009, 04:04:20 PM
I have a 1980 cj7 4.2L engine. my voltage meter is not working how do I test to see if it is a wire or the meter itself. I have tried different meters and still no voltage on the dash gauge.

What about hooking it up directly to the battery?

take a volt meter and check the wires that go onto the back of the gauge, one should have around 12v if your J isn't running. then check the other wire with a amp meter to a ground to make sure you have a good ground. If both the wires are descent your gauge is probably ef'd.
