You're gonna need a REAL big alternator to deal with the current draw from a winch. Bigger than you'd ever put on a Jeep.

Most of the current being drawn by your winch is actually coming from your battery. That's one of the reasons that a lot of people upgrade to Optimas and dual battery setups. (well, there's also the issue of acid spilling and running welders, but we're getting off track)

So yes...get your money back for your melted alternator, because laternators aren't supposed to melt.

Upgrading your alternator is a good idea if you're putting additional strain on your electrical system (lights, big stereo, CB, winch, power inverters, rice cookers  ;D )

Those types of drain are longer term and more gradual. Winches tend to be drastic and short term.

Yeah...a 200 amp alternator should not have any problems. Maybe it was a defect in the alternator that was the root cause.

i have not had any issues with the stock one and i have used my winch alot to pull others up big hills and through some thick guck
long pulls

i just tend to keep the revs up a bit  1500 - 2000 rpms

seems to do the trick

Call Dave or Rick at Amperage tech.
Dave was showing me this whizzy alternator that created crazy amps at idle.
I'm gonna get me one. ;)
You may need dual batteries as well

Have those WANKERS at that store you bought it at still not fixed up your problem?  Maybe it is time to post their poor customer service record on this site, so others in the community can avoid buying parts from a place who treats their customers so poorly.    Guys this problem goes right up to the owner of the store, this is not an issue with just the front counter staff.   >:(  I leave it up to you Newfie on weather or not to tell the whole story......  I for one have no interest in shopping at this place after Newfies poor treatment.

while were on the topic of alternators, im triing to fit an alternator in the fc. at this point the typical chevy didnt fit, i can almost cram a mini chev race style alt in but it realy doesnt have a whole lot of beans either.

ive seen alternators in a generator housing, but i dont know the name or any stats. i do know i was quoted $500 bucks to roder one in. Ive got a 6 and a 12v generator, but i dont know much about generators other than to know they are inefficient and weak

any ideas. would a reputable alternator shop in town be able to make what i need.

as an aside just to see my delema the factory generator is mouned almost under the drivers seat on the frame rail with a tenshioner pully. The miny alternator i have actualy is within 1/2 inches of the frame rail the block and the side of the engine cover ( remeber fc is a cab over and the engine is between the seats)

also there realy arent a lot of places to mount accesorys to on a flathead engine.

so im open to ideas.

im swapping in a dana 300 and a 700r4 so maybe a pto powered alternator? anybody got a pto from a d300 for sale?

I am still running my stock alternator in my 95 YJ with my 8274 (one of the highest drawing winches).  If you are firing upgraded alternator, you might have something else wrong.  What battery are you using and how many CCAs?  Were you running other high amp draw items at the same time?

Ya I miss Rich, the boys can solve most problems. I'm starting my cummins on 1Optimum Yellow on their advice.
It's started every time, even down to -15.

Oh and by the way they rebuild winch motors as well

Yea we missed Rich so much, we convinced him to come back from BC. He's here everyday (well almost) 8:30 to 5:30 Monday to Friday.

Everyone knows where that alternator is from. It sat on their counter for about 4 years.

Yeah, just use amp tech bud, they will fix you up.

Yep, who knows what bonus material was inside that alternator from it's many days as a paperweight!

AmpTech can make that alternator twice as good as what the original logo was on that thing.
