Title: 88 YJ 2.5L rear end very noisy 410 gears

I noticed that the pinion moves very easy, can I just tighten it up or should I replace parts?

if you can move your pinion up and down or side to side, not rotating it then odds are things are loose inside and wearing bad. you may be able to tighten the pinion nut up to keep you going but after that plan for gears and bearings.
