Title: 97 GC
Post by: 2grand4u on March 24, 2009, 02:55:46 PM
i have a 97 jeep grand cherokee larado the interior is 90% the body has two little spots of rust and some trail damage it's about 85% it also has a new rebuilt tranny with about 1000kms on it, it also has a 3.5 RE super flex lift kit and 31 inch tsl super swampers with 90% tread life left i would like to build an xj or a jeep with a frame, but i would like to get your 2 cents on what you think it's worth because for me to start a new project i need to sell the first one.

i'll take some pictures and try and figure out how to post them

You might be able to get 3.5-4.5k.    You will not get the money put into it in lift/tires back and a stock 97 Laredo can be had for 3.5k.

For comparison a 1999 GC LTD can be had for $4900

If you ever want to check the _real_ value of your less than 10 year old car, here is the link. It's supposed to be for members only ;)

It's very helpful for negotiating and a great selling tool.

Or... you could start out by swapping that awd t-case out for the np231 that's for sale on this board... ;D

does your grand have a v8 in it already? or is it the I6?

its a great idea to build up a ZJ (if u have the patience, skills and $$$$$)  but there is NO need to swap out your 5.2 for a chev 350. there is almost no gain except for a headache trying to get everything in there and getting it to FIT. specially when an intake, chip and exhuast (1000$) will give you TO much power as it is.

u want to start lookng at a place to upgrade, start saving your coinage for axles.  to be blunt, your stock ones suck. your rear axle can trussed for some strength, but i kid you not when i say there is NO aftermarket parts for it.
plus, i'll give ya the benefit of the doubt cause ur new to wheelin'  you will learn FAST that open diffs (as you have) stink, and lockers and gears will quickly replace teh want for big lifts and tires.
or go big or go home with a  full long arm kit

http://www.ironrockoffroad.com/Merchant2/merchant.mvc?Screen=PROD&Store_Code=IROR&Product_Code=IR-Z7PLA&Category_Code=PFZ

to all you AWD haters, i laugh out loud!
i beat the bloody hell out of my 249. they say it doesn't even lock 50/50 in low range, well i'll tell ya i put mine through more crap than most of you rubi owners ;) and trust me, it worked just fine.  now when/if i build another ZJ, i would swap it out in an instant, yes, but if you daily drive your grand in this province, yes id keep it.  i have one in my 00' grand and no i woouldn't swap it over. i like it.
my .02

with enough power and skinny pedal yes your AWD will do good ..     like our little buddy hear learnt this past weekend my stock little rubicon went alot further then that 3.5 inch lift and V8 went    and i wasnt even locked up .. when i locked up i chewed alot harder and further through deeper snow

i love AWD    on a subaru   but in my jeep its 4x4 and then i even have my lockers when i need them
as far as i know (and i could be wrong) but i thought i heard you cant get lockers for the ZJ AWD   because the tcase wouldnt last on it
but i might of understood wrong

i am french so it does happen from time to time   ::)

doesn't matter what ur runnin, thats always bad news bears.   4 low the 249 is just fine.  the only people who seem to have a problem with it don't wheel ZJs ;)
running selectable lockers would be ok.  to see what it'd be like, put ur rubi in 4x4 and lock the rear locker and drive around a parking lot.  thats what it'd be like.  not fun.

BTW, sounds like i missed an 'interesting' trail run last week, i sense bad blood lol

You are wrong. You can get most of the same lockers for a ZJ as for a TJ or XJ unless you have the D44 rear then its tougher. Driving it on the street with auto lockers  would be hard on the driveline but the t-case wouldn't care much.

BTW after 1996 the NP249 locks up fully in low range.

Personally I like the the Select-Trac 4wd system(NP242) that came with some XJs and ZJs with the 4.0L. You get 2wd, 4wd lock HI, Awd high, and 4wd low lock. Lots of options for all kinds weather.

Well I'm kicking the 249 to the curb hopefully during Easter, I have everything I need (I hope) & I'll be able to see the difference between the two...
