I just purchased my first jeep a 94 YJ 140,000 kms and it drives horrible on the highway (amazing in the bush) I am looking for some pointers to get it driving better without spending huge cash. It has a 2'' shackle lift, 31'' tires, sway bar removed and track bars mounts elongated ( worn out ). If I took out the shackle lift can I keep the 31's on? I would also like to purchase four used alums, stock or after market something that looks a little nicer than the old steel ones I have. Thanks to any help

..... sway bar removed ....
that's your daily driveability problem - just get used to it, don't go over 100 km/hr, take your corners slow with caution
If you want driveability back,.. put a swaybar back on with the proper length end links
-
And fix the front trackbar
-
Where would I buy one of these adjustable trac bars? What kind of $ should I expect to pay?
-
Fix the track bar and put the sway bar back on with disconnects.
-
forget the track bar and sway bars. im running with nothing now and like it.
oh yea, it handles like a light dump truck, but what can you do?
x2 with fixing the track bar issue, if u can't take it off. and x2 on the sway bar. it'll help around corners and stuff

Ok this is the one I'm going to use its coming real soon. I hate the dump truck feel all over the place and this will really help. I also have the quick disconnects for the sway bar so the track bar is going on.

Bear gave me a smoking deal on it and I will buy from again.

How much do you want to spend. You can return some of the driveability with a trackbar, and stock front swaybar, or you can upgrade a lot of the suspension to make the jeep perform like a car onroad, and still work the same offroad with the disconnecting of 1 pin.
As for the disco trackbar, you can buld one for cheap. If you are interested I do them for about 250$ installed.

Interested in track bar solution !!! Got the lift in and 31's on and now feels nervous on bumpy roads. Too much bump steer from difference in track bar vs steering link angles. Have and ideas for rear track bar?

Wow everybody thanks for the replies. I am going to call bear and order the teliscopic trac bar

We can look at that as your first fab job when you make it over.
We can do the same in the rear, but I really wouldnt worry about it.

Been dabbling and have rear recovery plates all fabbed up just have to drill em and bolt em on. Monday or Tuesday works for me.
-
for the original post......start with the basics. fix all the loose parts and get a wheel alignment.
-
Sorry to pull the thread off topic. Excellent advise. Fix the worn parts first then try alternative mods to help with ill handling. Safety first.

Way back in the good ol' days when I had my YJ on the road, I installed a 2.5" lift with 31's. I built a trackbar braket similar to the one RE lifts have. I removed the rear TB and built sway-bar discos that were 2.5" longer. I didn't like the ride as it was a bit bumpy, and it had a bit of bumpsteer as well. For some reason I noticed my bumpsteer was no longer there one day and after investigating, I found that the bolt that held the braket to the diff had come out for some unknown reason. I decided to remove the tracbar as it wasn't doing anything and the bumpsteer was gone. I didn't notice any bad drivability issues without it either. After a few wheeling trips and disconnecting and reconnectinng the sway bar, I got lazy and neglected to reconnect. What a differenc in ride. It was way smooter. It did however have a bit of noticeable body roll without it, but nothing scary.
My advise is to ditch both TBs and the SB, and just drive accordingly. It's a Jeep, not a sports car, and it will never ride like a Caddy.
Just my $0.02

Hhhhmmm...tempting thought leaving the track bar off. The bump steer is caused by the different angles and lengths of the steering linkage and track bars. Did it eat up spring bushings without track bar? My brand new RE swaybar disconect bushings are already split and hanging out after a week.

This is not my every day driver. Just a fun toy. But saying that my wife wants to drive it to town and the beach this summer and I don't want there to be any issues in handling. I plan to use it myself for strictly offroad Playing around and hunting. So I am looking to meet some where in the middle. Right now at 90 km it is two hands on the wheel and a pinch mark in the seat it is so scary. I still think it could be the shackles but nobody here has mentioned anything yet so maybe not. I sent the guy at beartrax a email saying I wanted to purchase a teli trac bar but he still has not got back to me with a price.
I am going to sawsall my rear trac bar off tonight since it is seized in and elongating the mounts and makes a horible clunk on every bump.
Thanks again for all the help, I hope the info keeps coming.

i have read in a bunch of places that any shackle lift over 1 inch can cause steering problems and the such.
