I6=XJ   not worth it in a Grand, i've had one......

if he's gettin a grand get one with a V8........  the 46RE or the 44RE.  believe the 44RE came with the 5.2L.  not great trannies either but its the same combo that comes in the pickups. same with the 99-04s with the 4.7L, came with 545RFE or whatnot, same combo in the Rams.........  there are some cheap 99/2000s on Kijiji right now too Nathan

is the swap as easy in a 98zj obd2 as it would be in say 93zj obd1?
i just read it was a direct swap in the earlyer years but not shure on the newer ones

Sorry, just to clarify...

4.0 42RE
5.2 44RH
5.9 46RE

The 44RH is not that bad of a trans, from what I hear anyways. You can also convert the 46RE to the 4.o but this tranny still has it's issues..
If I had it my way, I'd go with a 5.9, but it's only offered in 98.
Most would advise to go with a least a 5.2 for the ZJ, the difference in gas in only ~3.5mpg, or something liie that..

Or you could replace the auto with the tried and true AX15.  I just happen to have a 94 ZJ with the rare manual option (blown motor).  $1500 and its yours ;)
