Title: Not cheap, just not retail.
Post by: mike s on March 31, 2009, 01:00:44 PM
A good point was brought up of the expense of keeping your ride going and SAFE.

Once you put your truck in 4wd, your putting huge strain on everything. Stuff breaks and wears out faster.
It's like slamming every door you close, pretty soon it'll far off it's hinges. Use the best you can get so your not doing the same job twice.

As a club we should have enough buying power to set up a cash account at a napa of something for wholesale discounts

Make a list of your favorite suppliers and try to get a decent break on the cost of parts.

I had thought about this sort of things also in the past... i.e. group buys or what have you?
I was beginning to think that there was such a beast out there, but only for members?
I would suggest that only CJA "members" should be offered something along these lines..
This would help keep the rigs safe out there for those that represent this club..

& yes, I'm still not a member as of yet.. so knowingly this would even exclude myself, but it sure would be another reason for non members to try & join.

i need to point this out. you mention that buying the best part the first time will save you in the long run... yet you suggest setting up a discount at Napa? how bout setting something up with a dealership. the factory parts probably lasted a long time even with the big tires and lift. and dont tell me the Moog "problem solvers" are the answer to anything, lol! ive seen them fall apart on small cars sooner then white box parts... ok, i ranted, i know. it happens.
anyways, i think someone can confirm this but there is a dealership that gives active CJA members discounts, and Central auto gives discounts as well. i may need confermation on that as well.

as for OEM parts from dealerships   yes they might be a bit better but for the price difference i would rather replace the part 3 times and still pay less then the stealership wants.
EX    wheel bearings from JEEP are almost 600 a corner    napa 165 a corner   so even if they only last 2 years its still better then paying 600

same goes for brake pads, clutches, shocks,

but thats my 2cents

and then there was the time I bought rad hoses for my 99 GC from Part Source (I think)  ends up it didn't fit.  Long story short it needed different diameters at each end.  Had to go to the dealership anyways.  I think certain parts are better from the dealership  :-\ but that's just me.  I agree parts like shoes, drums, pads ect. are probably better at places like napa, but some things the dealership has an edge on and sometimes they can compete price wise; I've yet to pay list from Coutesy.

Buyer beware. You get what you pay for. I know napa carries 3-5 lines of brake parts. Stay away from the cheapest stuff. They can usually get what you want for considerbaly less eg. Bilstein shocks etc (napa bought out Altrom) and world PAC is metric carries the top end manufactures stuff for way less than MSRP. Lots of thief stuff is OEM. Been parts shopping for more than 25 yrs.

The best is to shop around. I have gotten parts for the dealer that are cheaper then the after market guys.

Just throwing it out there...i really do not know the answer.
Does Courtesy supply prizes every year?
Does NUXJR (not him personally but where he works) supply prizes every year?

Tower has every year since 2003.

i will always support anyone that supports us.
National, Modern, etc have always got my business.
