just pull the cover off and see what ratio it is. or do a full turn of the pinion and count axel rotations.
1 pinion rotation =3.73 turns of the axel

how do you tell the difference from 3.55 to 3.73 they are really close to just eyeball it
-
most diffs have a tag that will tell you the ring gear too. it it has a V8 and a hitch, chances are its a 3.73 as well

I have three '93 V8 Grand Cherokees. All have V8s and limited package. One has no tow package and 3.55s. One has tow package and 3.73s. One had tow package and the upcountry suspension and 3.73s. So one with a V8 and tow package would be a good bet but try to confirm by finding a tag under one of the diff cover bolts. Check the front diff if the rear diff is missing the tag.
Here is the really goofy part. Two of them have the CV axles in the front diff. One has u-joint axles. Guess which one. Nope not the Upcountry. Its the non-tow package 3.55 gears unit. ???

This is backwards, 1 turn of the axle = 3.73 turns of the pinion

hey clay, you have a V8 grand that came with ujoint axles? i thought the u joint axles only came with the 6cyl/NP242 transfer case?
side note. can u pm some of that info on ur non' running ZJs? and maybe why they are not runnin?

Nope I have a V8 with the NP249 and u-joints.

I'd be surprised if Clay has a ZJ that ISN'T running. lol

I currently own 3 ZJs. One is the trail rig(its running). The other was my daily driver but the fuel pump went so I started to part it out. Then I bought a '95 to replace it and that turned out to have a bad head gasket and front diff so its parked as well. Technically they all run..... I'm just not driving them. :P
