Title: Dana 35 Spider gear replacement help...
Post by: Jeepster on April 16, 2009, 12:52:24 PM
Just discovered that I have some broken teeth (on spider gears) on my rear Dana 35 (1994 YJ).
How hard are they to replace ?
I have never done it, heck I have never even looked at the inside of a diff until 2 days ago LOL

Think I could replace them myself ?

Can I put used ones in ? (I was layed off a few weeks ago so I have limited funds, if any).
Does anyone have any used ones ?

Any help would be awesome. I really want to get it on the road asap since the weather is finally starting to act nice.

Ok so far I have have...

1. Removed center pin
2. Removed tires and drums
3. Slid axle shafts in and removed C clips.
4. Slid axle shafts out.

So how do you get the spider gears out now ?
If I rotate the pinion, the spider gears do not turn ?

If I remember correctly on the C-clip dana there are little black clips locked in place around the outisde of the carrier that need to be removed to get the spider gears out - but maybe let a Dana Guru confirm that - don't want you to do more work then you have too

I cannot get them to turn at all...
The smaller of the gears have moved a bit but none of them will turn.

Can I remove the carrier to have better access to them ?

Well I got them out...

Only thing is the spider gears that Jay gave me are not the right ones :(

I am positive that it was the exact same D35 that he had at his shop tht they came out of.

Any ideas ?

I think I do.

There are at least 3-4 different sets of spiders for d35's. Bring your old ones over, we can try to match them up. I've repaired a few traclocs, so I should have  set around somewhere.
