I would like to first thank everyone of you and your guests for participating in the CJA Off-Road 101. We are hoping to have a fun and educational day for all.
The Event will be held within the McLean Creek Off Road Recreation Area on Saturday June 13th 2009. We will be meeting at 8:30am at the McLean Creek store for check in. At 9am we will travel to the gravel pit as a group where we will hold the learning sessions. A Map to the Mclean Creek store is found on the CJA web site here.
We will break for lunch at approx 11:30am. Please bring yourself and guests a picnic lunch and lots of water. There will be no time or facilities for cooking.
At approximately 12:30 we will embark on a trail run on a pre-selected trail. You will have to use your newly learned skills over the course of the run and may possibly push your comfort levels a bit. We do however guarantee that all the obstacles are passable and should you feel really uncomfortable there is a bypass around most of them.
The 101 day will end with the completion of the selected trail. At this point you will have the opportunity to head home or if time permits there may be another run on a more challenging trail. If such run does occur, the trail leader will determine what the requirements are for the run at that point.
I am at this time going to warn you that there are serious risks that are taken when off-roading, we are going to try to teach you the safest procedures to ensure that every one is as safe as possible. Damage to your vehicle is also a strong possibility “trail rash” is a very likely to occur.
All non member participants will have to read and sign the CJA liability waiver. All participants under the age of 18 will have to have a legal guardian sign for them. For participants that have children under the age of 5 we strongly suggest that they are not brought to this event. Also we'd like to request that pets are left at home for this day too.
For more info on this subject please do not hesitate to email me and I will answer or have an individual contact you to answer your questions.
In conclusion I have a few reminders:
- a donation to the CJA Trail fund will be asked as an entry fee.
- Drugs and alcohol are strictly prohibited. You will be asked to leave and possibly the police will be contacted.
- The owner of the vehicle must be present, either as a driver or rider.
- Proof of ownership, insurance and a valid driver's license for the driver is required and will be asked for.
- Please notify someone that you are attending the event, and bring the info for an emergency contact. It will be required and asked for.
- Extra clothing is strongly suggested. One full change is a good idea; you could get very wet during the day.
Thank you for participating and I will see you on Saturday June 13.
-
Am i able to participate in this with a learners liscence and a co pilot with a class 5 drivers liscence?
-
I'd love to do this but I don't yet have front tow points - as soon as I buy some or get some I will Register
-
Registration link sent.
Thanks.
-
are any of the hazzards deep mud holes? Can they be bypassed?
-
I can't speak for the trail that Waytec is going to choose, but if last year is any indication, this will be about developing skills and not about mud bogging 8)
-
That's what I was hoping for.
-
Mclean Creek is not open yet so I can not speak at what the trail is like. We will be using the same trail as last year and the one big mud hole had a bypass. The day is about skills and it will be strongly encouraged to avoid the holes.
-
I would highly recommend this, I did this last year, and it was excellent!
-
Hey Z.... where did you disappear to?
-
Registered ;D
-
Know what you need for volunteers yet? I should be around in June and wouldn't mind helping out. Maybe I can even drag the G/F or a buddy out to lend an extra hand.
-
If you want to come out and volunteer more the better.
-
Registered - now hopefully the Fiance will go for it!
Thanks everyone, this is a GREAT idea to get my feet wet into off roading.
-
I am willing to volunteer. Let me know what you need.
Cheers
-

-
Raf, it will be a little harder than the run we did at Waiporous... just a fyi
sounds great, I've found the waiporous run easy, I've been up to top of the world only at maclain so a more challenging run would be great.
-
about the same as top of the world.
bringing the wife? I am trying to convince mine to come out.
-
the wife will definitely be there
-
id love to come but my tires are like 20-30% tread left and no money to buy better tires
-
Tow Hooks - and hitch receiver are now installed. 8)
on another note - my fiance saw our KK with it's front end on jackstands - probably 6-8" higher than normal, and said it looked good that way.... maybe a lift will be next. ;D

As in lift kits? for the 2008+ liberty?
couldn't find anything on google, do you have a link?
The major lifts I've found for the KK are JeepingByAl, Rockkrawler, RockyRoad, and I think a daystar lift.

Finally a great chance to get that CB installed and get out on the trials and learn me somethin!
Thanks for putting this on guys!
-
Well folks...
Unfortunately, I'm feeling worse and worse about this day...
With our wedding (Sept 5) bills adding up WAY higher than expected, and no extra cash in the bank... I think I need to bow out of this one. If something (Jeep Gods Forbid) should happen to our Liberty, we are NOT in the position to fix it, and our Jeep's our daily driver.
So long sob story short - my fiance and I won't be there :'(...
Maybe when finances are better - or next year - I'll try to make it out again. This was/is a great idea, and thanks to all at the CJA for putting this on.
Brendon.
-
Good call Brendon. I am not a fan of having the DD as a wheeler.
Next year snag a cheap jeep right before the 101, and wheel it stock.... and then the upgrades begin!!
-
ok the 101 is a week away! :D as for the donation to the cja as an entrance fee...when? where? and how much?
-

Find someone to ride shotgun with.
-
Krista (my better half) and I will be collecting the donations as well as organizing the paper work at the store before we go to the gravel pit.
For donations we are asking for what you fell the day is worth.
Last year we had people coming up to us at the end of the day donating more saying it was a great day. No refunds were asked for. :)
-
what time are we meeting there? anything special we should bring?

Page 1... 3rd post.
-
:-[ oops should have known that.
-
Might have a seat free for the run, but you'd have to do some of the driving, only fair. Back seat not so comfy, sub inside.
-
I want to attend this but I fell short of some necessary repairs that are preventing me from attending.
Is it possible to ride shotgun with someone so I can at least meet some folks out there & gain some knowledge of this course?
I should be able to fully attend next year 100%, but that's a year away from now.
LMK, it would be greatly appreciated. I can drive out to the store in McClean, just can't wheel it.
Thanks! If I'm not to late...
-
whats wrong with ze ZJ?
-
A few things...
Missing front DS, the Double Cardan went again for a third time.. I'll prob just buy the ball kit to rebuild, $30 or so, for now I'm 2wd with a 249 t-case.. (Parking sucks...lol I've adjusted my parking brake but keep forgetting to release it before I drive, so I have to go & re-adjust again)
Driveline issue somewhere? I think it's the t-case as there is free play in the output shaft (not rotational), I have the 242 to swap in but waiting for my buddy with tools & garage space to commit to a date. Over heating, thought the prob was solved but on these last warm days she was running hot again. I still need to run the garden hose over the rad, might be just caked with mud or even just a t-stat???
-
were is the general store and approximatly how far from red deer or calgary is it
-
find your way to 22x and turn right. can't miss it ;)
Waytec will be comin from red deer i believe. my guess is the best way to come (at least i'd come) is take 2a all the way south to 22x/marquis of lorne trail. go west till you hit mclean creek. it is some 30 minutes due west from the calgary city limits (literally timed from my house cause i'm that close) there is a big sign that says mclean creek. turn left. the store is on the right hand side. it is the only thing out there. if you CAN miss it then you are 'special' we'll be in the parking lot at 800 i believe. i will be 5 minutes late cause i wil spill my morning coffee on my lap when i try to jump in the jeep with it leaving Camp.......
-
dang, i can't this year, i would really love to come out!!
but hopefully next year i can make it!
-
map and directions from city center... there is a sign off of 22 at the turnoff to get to the store saying "Mclean Creek Recreation Area"
it's easy to find ...

The Red Neck Deer / Sylvan Lake crowd is meeting Waytec at 5:30 am at Tim Hortons on Gasoline Alley southbound. We'll proceed together behind his lead from there, refueling in Bragg Creek.
-
HELP!! Where is the map of how to get to the Off Road 101 meeting location on Saturday?
-
Two posts back #61 is the Google map to the location. There is a sing on hwy. 66 saying McLean Creek for the turn off.
-
I think I will be joining the group...first time out this year...fun times!!!
-
Did u register?
-
Hey! Just registered. It'll be my wifes first time out 4x4ing. Gonna try to get her to do some of the driving. We're going to bring two of our kids, five & twelve, hope thats not a problem.
-
Did u register?
Yup...registered today!!!! Woohoo!
-
3 more sleeps!!! ;D
-
Is there somewhere close that I can park my tow rig ?
-
tons of space out there for your rig!
-
is ur new heep not street legal tom? mcleans CLOSE
-
Its street legal, but I have never been there or seen the difficulty ? So I just figured on breaking something on it LOL ;D
Are you going JohhnyC ?
-
I just looked at the map, its close enough I will drive.
CAA can always bring me home if needed ;) LOL
-
i shall be there, top down, doors off, rocking the oakleys!
-
Well if everything works out I should be there. I already took the day off work. The heep is getting a new master cylinder, new rear axle seals, new power steering pressure hose, new front brake line brackets, new fuel line, tranny flush, front and rear diff flush, and an oil change tomorrow. So the only thing I'm waiting on is to hear back about the registration ????
I filled out the form this morning, but I haven't heard anything back. I hope there is still space available ?
-
HELP!! Where is the map of how to get to the Off Road 101 meeting location on Saturday?
The other thing you can do is simply go to Bragg Creek and follow the Jeeps. Our group from central Alberta should be there fueling up by 7:30 based on Waytec's departure schedule. Many other Jeeps will follow over the course of an hour. There's a Shell and I believe a Husky within sight of each other. There'll be Jeeps at the pumps at both.
-
Have a good run everyone if i still had my jeep i would have been there might take my new truck out for a test and tune so may run into you guys :)
-
:D
I am so pumped!! Thank you for the map. I am going out for my first time in my 09 Jeep Wrangler and have been counting the days.
What item should i absolutely not forget??

You NEED front and rear tow points, goos tires.

things to remember / things to bring
In conclusion I have a few reminders:
- a donation to the CJA Trail fund will be asked as an entry fee.
- Drugs and alcohol are strictly prohibited. You will be asked to leave and possibly the police will be contacted.
- The owner of the vehicle must be present, either as a driver or rider.
- Proof of ownership, insurance and a valid driver's license for the driver is required and will be asked for.

different people bring different things ... and the more you go out the more you learn what you'd like to have in the jeep ( and eventually you run out of room lol )
here's what i can think of that are some of the most important
- full size spare tire ( this is more of a must have)
- tow strap and tree saver ( no metal hooks on the ends)
- basic tools (especially tools needed to disconnect your front sway bar if needed)
- extra food and water
- map of the area your going into
- fire extinguisher
- spill kit

:D ;D
Thanks again.
-
Is it unusual that I filled out the registration yesterday and I haven't heard any confirmation back ????
Also, is there air near by so I can air up my tires after the run, before I come home ?
-
Don't worry too much about airing up. A lot of CJA members have onboard air and will be more than happy to help you out after the run.
-
Great thanks, on board air will be one of my next mods !
I will have to talk to someone who has done it and see what is involved.
-
Waytec IS employed fulltime, and not by the CJA.
So no....he'll get back to you as soon as he can. ;D
-
o0o0o0o I am getting sooooo excited
-
i think the point of registering was just to get an idea of how many people to expect ...
i'm pretty sure no one's going to be turned back ( as long a vehicle requirments are met)
so even if you don't get a response from registering don't worry about it
-
two more sleeps
-
I will be sending out the remaining confirmations tonight once I get them from Fug who is looking after the online stuff.
Front tow points are mandatory.
The requirements are on the first page and where email to the participants. If you DO NOT meet the requirements you will not be allowed to participate. I am not being a hard arse the requirements are for everyone’s safety.
The dead line to register is Midnight tonight
-
I was going to come out, but my POS is still on jackstands, going to Koocanusa instead. I will get you some GC's when I get back.
Oh, I still have the seats Waytec, do you still want them?
-
one more sleep!!! ;D doing final prep on the xj tonight and packing my luch!! (can anyone else tell i am just a 10 year old trapped in a mans body???)
-
so we (me Trevor/Immortal and Fraser) will be meeting at the Timmies in shawnessy tomorrow at 7.30 to head out to Mclean if anyone wants to convoy out. look for one BADA$$ YJ, a 'typical' lifted XJ and the lil' Red ZJ that could hahahaha
but seriously, me trev and fras (i think right fras?) will be at timmies. red YJ, black XJ, Red ZJ if anyone feels the need to carpool out!
-
Sounds good. The timmies is down by crappy tire right?
-
Not to insult anyone but for volunteers we are restricting it to the club members or members of other clubs we work with.
-
;D... you lazy bum Pat ... when will you join the club again? ;D...
Aaron,... Pat & Michie were members before me,... he might know a few things about wheeling. ;)
He should still have his sticker on his heep.
for what it is worth... He's ok by me if you need help...
You guys have fum tomorrow...I'll be home building my garage.
Cheers
-
Just wanted to thank everyone who help out with the event, I had a great time, and everyone was so friendly and having fun, Also thanks everyone who help me get my XJ boosted and got me through the trail. It was my alternator, but i made it back to Calgary fine. Longest lasting battery i have ever had.
Tom we lost you on the trail, but i noticed you Jeep at the store on my way out, so i hope all is well.
Take care and thanx again
-
I just wanted to say thanks to everyone who made today a fun day out. I loved the trail will hopefully do it again soon. I wish I could have stayed out longer to go for another run, but there is always next time.
I hope to be out for the next run
-
Just wanted to say thank you to the CJA and the volunteers that helped out today. This event was very informative. I have done a bit of wheeling before but never had a chance to experience all that it has to offer as far as true technical procedures and thought processes for recovery/winching/hills etc... I was very impressed by the detail and willingness to answer questions by the volunteers. I know that a lot of people learned a lot of necessary skills that will prevent accident and injury in the future.
Also thanks to all of the participants for coming out. I imagine that this will become a very regular event in the future....
Thanks again
Joey
-
all right my turn! i want to thank everyong for making this an absolutely awsome day!!! cannot wait untill the next event!
-
I have my official thanks in the other thread, but again thanks for a great day on behalf of the Red Deer Packrats. 8)
-
Thanks again to CJA Executive and Volunteers for putting on such a great program! If you weren't already hooked on off-roading before attending this event, you certainly were upon completing it! You are all a great bunch of people and I learned way more than I expected I would and had way more fun! ;D
Hope to have the opportunity to run with you again - it was a Blast!
P.S. If anyone has pics from yesterday, I'd love to get some. Thanks.
Cindy
-
Thanks for a great day guys. Hope to join you for a trail ride or two this summer!
