hey guys i'm thinking, if i sell the WJ eventually, to goto a pickup. just be nice to have it for moving stuff and maybe even towing the YJ if i go somewhere far. the thing is i wanna pick up something either older, or high in KM, cause eventually i plan on buying a new truck in the next couple years.
i'm thinking of something like a mid 90s Chev with a 350 or even a newer 3/4 tonne, with high kms, saw an 03' chev with 300k on it, liek would something like that be suitable? just gathering opinions!
personally i'm leaning towards an older chev; parts are plentiful and they are fiarly simple vehicles to work on.
what you all think?

2nd Gen Dodge Cummins.

Why not keep the WJ as the tow rig until you get a new truck? If you need to haul stuff you could use the trailer the YJ is on? If need be you'd be surprised how much junk you can tie in or on the WJ's. I once took home 9 bales of R20 in/on mine, mind you I had no passengers but I did have the 2 car seats still in.

Have I got a deal for you. I just upgraded my tow rig to a duramax, so I'm looking to sell my 3/4 ton gmc. It's a 99 ext cab long box, all set-up for towing. It's towed my jeep and camper all over the place, let me know if your interested.

id go with a 3/4 ton truck, im partial to dodge or ford. but any will do if its just a trailer with a vehicle on it.
the bigger the truck the less it works when towing.

true dat!!
when i get a job (decent paying) I will be looking at getting a 3/4 ton, as a tow rig, and to do side jobs.
-
Older dodge = maybe a Cummins 12 valve = good choice for a tow rig.
-
you guys are totally right about the cummins.... only thing is i can't seem to find one with less than 300k for under like, 8k......
-
300k? just broke in.... do it... and make sure you have enough room on a trailer for mine too.
-
I've never owned one, but the mechanics that I've talked to have essentially told me that the cummins 12 valve makes the 4.0L in most Jeeps look short-lived. ;D
Yeah...it'll make you think that you're driving a tractor, and will blow a plume of black smoke that will obscure the road for a 1/4 mile behind you...but they just keep working.
-
well i can seriously start shopping as soon as somebody is graced with buying my WJ haha

My 1997 Chev i use to tow our trailer out to the farm has allmost 600,000 kms!It starts and runs evrytime i need it.

Depending on how often you're going to tow and how far, the IFS on GMs is a way better ride than the ford or dodge. From what I've heard the GMs with a 6.0L get about the same milage towing or not, but they're not a rocket when weighted down. You can still work on most of the truck without going to the dealership. The Cummings is a indestructible motor but the whole neighborhood might not be impressed with the rumble as it warms up, and the lack of locking hubs or an axle disconnect tends to wear out the front end even of it never gets put in 4WD. My $0.03

I was looking for around the $8000 make for my tow rig. I just moved to a duramax, so the old truck is just sitting here.

There are so many options for tow rigs its always hard to decide.
The older chevs are good. The 6.0 deisel is a great motor. Slightly underpowered, but very reliable. The Chev IFS has the better ride of the big three, but needs a few upgrades to be reliable. Its the weakest front of the bunch.
The older 12v dodge trucks have a great motor, but in honesty I'd advoid them. The auto trans are terrible, the wiring is poor, and the body's are prone to falling apart. Its shame because the motors are so strong.
The older fords have the most durable drivetrain. Dont look at 6.5 deisle, they are grossly underpowered and hard to find parts for. The 7.3's, 94.5 and later are much better engine. The only weak part on the fords is the auto trans. The fords with the SFA's have the most durable front ends.
Given the choice I would recommend chev or ford when looking at those mid 90 years. Gas pots, or deisel.
I'd avoid something like Joey's 454 vortec unless you really like 6mpg.
If you do go with a chev, talk to joey about how to strengthen up the chev IFS front end. He just did a bunch of upgrades on his, and they are relatively cheap to do.

thanks bill, buys, the 7.3 powerstroke would be nice. probably going to go with a chev with a 350 in it.
this is assuming someone buys my WJ, and i don't do something stupid like find some JK takeoffs for cheap and order a 4" lift. cause that'd be dumb
