People at work here are going nuts. Emails have been sent out, blah blah... Quite frankly, I believe this has gone way to far. I am pretty sure ANY flu can put your life at risk if you're not healthy, a baby, or coming of age.
What do you guys think?
-
Next people will want to boycott the pork industry. Most people will trust what the media hypes and stuffs down their throat.
-
you cant get it form eating pork, but seeing as how the World Health Organization has declared a level 5 pandemic alert, and the virus has spread to 16 countries in a matter of days I dont think its blown out of preportion
-
The only reason it is at a 5 alert is because it has been found in (like you said) 16 countries, and that's it. I don't think they base it on deaths or what not, it's just the fact of it coming up in so many different countries now that it is getting up there... What about the common flu? Isn't THAT in every country? That must be a lvl 7! :-[
-
I think it has gone to far too, but i also believe there will be a day when some infection or disease will become a BIG worldwide problem, the only thing is they blow every little flu virus out of control, kinda the cry wolf thing, so I don't care anymore, lol.
I think it has gone to far, let it go media
-
four more cases today in calgary, guys it wont be long before this swine flu starts turning people into zombies, then what huh?????

Hahaha! I totally agree.. But, if this swine flu doesn't start the zombie apocalypse, then I don't want to hear about it everyday in the news! :P

"Of the three genera of human flu, two are endemic also in swine: Influenzavirus A is common and Influenzavirus C is rare.[2] Influenzavirus B has not been reported in swine. Within Influenzavirus A and Influenzavirus C, the strains endemic to swine and humans are largely distinct.
Swine flu is common in swine in the midwestern United States (and occasionally in other states), Mexico, Canada, South America, Europe (including the United Kingdom, Sweden, and Italy), Kenya, China, Japan, Taiwan, and other parts of eastern Asia.[1]
Swine flu is rare in humans. People who work with swine, especially people with intense exposures, are at risk of catching swine influenza if the swine carry a strain able to infect humans. However, these strains infrequently circulate between humans as SIV rarely mutates into a form able to pass easily from human to human. In humans, the symptoms of swine flu are similar to those of influenza and of influenza-like illness in general, namely chills, fever, sore throat, muscle pains, severe headache, coughing, weakness and general discomfort.
The 2009 flu outbreak in humans that is widely known as "swine flu" apparently is not due to a swine influenza virus. It is due to a new strain of influenza A virus subtype H1N1 that derives from one strain of human influenza virus, one strain of avian influenza virus, and two separate strains of swine influenza virus. The origins of this new strain are unknown, and the World Organization for Animal Health (OIE) reports that this strain has not been isolated in swine.[3] It passes with apparent ease from human to human, an ability attributed to an as-yet unidentified mutation.[4] The strain in most cases causes only mild symptoms and the infected person makes a full recovery without requiring medical attention and without the use of antiviral medicines.[5]"

herashio cane, just a hero

All joking aside, I do agree that perhaps the media is making this seem more extreme then it may be, but I do feel there is need for some level of concern, based solely on the highly contagious nature of H1N1 virus, and due to the fact that it is spreading so rapidly. So wash your hands people, or I might just have to get Matt Sakatch to blow your heads off from 1000 yards!

It is kinda scary knowing there is no vaccine and there may not be one for another few months.
Also, the fact that it is killing healthy young mexicans, and others are only mildly affected.
I believe I also heard that it can be biologically produced, but who would do that, terrorists?
-
The T virus was biologically produced, that didnt work out well for racoon city now did it.
-
Ever seen the movie "Outbreak"? ;D They are going to fire bomb Mexico! I'm going to go watch a movie at a theater tonight and start caughing and blowing my nose like crazy. We'll see how many people get freaked out and leave.

hahah wear a mask too just for effect, and get someone to mist your face so you look clammy

Haha, lets see who makes fun of me now for ordering that gas mask and stock piling ammunition! The only question I need answered now is after supply lines and food sources are depleted, what is the best way to cook and cannabilize my neighbors!

Here's the issue: everyone has normal antibodies for normal flu, but people under the age of 2 and over 65 are more at risk. However, with new strains of flu, NO ONE has antibodies for it....so basically, if you do catch it, then you are S.O.L. just like a 2 year old or frail senior over 65 would be....you might be fine, you might be toast (err....bacon?).
So let's see....in 16 countries now, and no one has antibodies in their blood to fight against it....the Pooh post is funny, but also hits kinda close to home. :)

I love Bacon.... The Swine Flu virus has nightmare about me.... ;D

If I understand the whole flu thing from years of it being on the news.... Every year the flu mutates just a bit, this is why the flu shot doesnt always work. So in reality there so far is nothing new here. I do understand that when you get numbers on flu deaths from mexico you may not be getting accurate numbers. I don't think they do an autopsy on all the old or young and that thier numbers may be a bit skewed as to how deadly this virus is. Everyone that has caught it in Canada just has the usual mild flu symptoms..... But then again I may be totally out in left field. I am booked to go to cancun on the 15th of my and am not sure yet what i will do. I am in wait and see mode. So to ease my mind I am going to go jeeping tomorrow and saturday!!!! ;)
-
Every year, the normal influenza strain mutates a bit....we're talking about a completely different strain that no one has had before.
Complete mutation, not just a bit.
Complete. Zombie. Mutation.

I read some news post that most people will recover from this with no medicine I think it's a little blown out of proportion, and swine is not the correct nomenclature here dude, it's Sus Domestica, please. Anyways, there are different regulations for food prep of swines, the flu has nothing to do with da bacon.

It wouldn't be a problem if the first guy that got it had worn a condom...

The best defense is a good offense. Anyone that can shoot a deliberate offhand 3" group at 100 meters is welcome to join me ;D

Some facts :)
The Center for Disease Control is the official reporting agency for the USA. On the CDC site is a link to an accepted worldwide reporting agency; WHO World Health Organization.
CDC reports the following factual numbers:as of April 30th 10:30am EST
States # of laboratory confirmed cases
Arizona 1
California 14
Indiana 1
Kansas 2
Massachusetts 2
Michigan 1
Nevada 1
New York 50
Ohio 1
South Carolina 10
Texas 26
TOTAL COUNTS 109 cases 1 death(Texas)
WHO reports the following:
Influenza A(H1N1) - update 6
30 April 2009 -- The situation continues to evolve rapidly. As of 17:00 GMT, 30 April 2009, 11 countries have officially reported 257 cases of influenza A (H1N1) infection.
The United States Government has reported 109 laboratory confirmed human cases, including one death. Mexico has reported 97 confirmed human cases of infection, including seven deaths.
The following countries have reported laboratory confirmed cases with no deaths - Austria (1), Canada (19), Germany (3), Israel (2), Netherlands (1), New Zealand (3), Spain (13), Switzerland (1) and the United Kingdom ( 8 ).
Further information on the situation will be available on the WHO website on a regular basis.
WHO advises no restriction of regular travel or closure of borders. It is considered prudent for people who are ill to delay international travel and for people developing symptoms following international travel to seek medical attention, in line with guidance from national authorities.
There is also no risk of infection from this virus from consumption of well-cooked pork and pork products. Individuals are advised to wash hands thoroughly with soap and water on a regular basis and should seek medical attention if they develop any symptoms of influenza-like illness.
So, 7 deaths only in Mexico???? Hmmm...i wonder why the media, errr...pharmaceutical companies want the # to be SO much higher? ::)
Travel is OK!!!! but perhaps our own countries may benefit from having people stay home spending money here...
So do i think it is blown out of proportion? ;)
P>S> 59,000 Americans died from REGULAR flu last year. i can't remember any hysteria over that loss :o

Nope flight is still on. Flying Continental airlines,
Ah, OK. flights schedules might change, but that's about it. (they cut 50% of flights to Mex.)
All the Canadian companies have canceled flights until June
-
Maybe this will turn out like the movie "Planet Terror" and we will all have to wear those gas mask type things, and look bad a$$ like Bruce Willis.
-
Quarter at 100ft with a 22?
That's about the right degree of accuracy, but I'm looking for people that can shoot it offhand. I'll settle for that from a kneeling position in pinch though.
Bonus point for anyone that can field strip an M14 or has a case of 7.62X51 in their basement ;)
Oh...and "thank you" to spinalguy for putting this in perspective. I was listening to the BBC this morning (my guilty pleasure) and a public health official from Mexico was speaking. You could hear the journalists in the press conference mis-interpreting every single thing he said. For instance:
Health official: "There are 26 confirmed cases of swine flu"
Journalist: "So 26 people are dead. How many more do you expect to die?"
Helth official: "No...not 26 dead. 26 confirmed cases of swine flu."
Journalist: "So your laboratory has confirmed that 26 of the people that are dead had swine flu?"
Health official: "No. There have been a total of 26 cases TOTAL of swine flu...
I can't remember how many he said had actually died. Once again...if it bleeds, it leads.
-

So true!

Read this today;
Bolivia is experiencing the worst outbreak of dengue fever in decades, with more than 50,000 people infected. The epidemic has also spread to neighbouring Argentina. Eastern Bolivia and northern Argentina - regions that generally have poorly equipped hospitals - are worst affected. Bolivia says 22 people have died, but a UN official said today the number is more likely to be in the hundreds.)
Didn't notice it making front page news or flights being cancelled to Bolivia.

Interesting how that works hey? I also heard that in Egypt, they are doing a mass slaughtering of pigs "just to be safe" I shake my head at the world today.
