Title: XJ Gas Tank Leak
Post by: CherokeeCharlie on November 13, 2005, 09:31:18 PM
I've got a '95 XJ that started leaking gas from the tank awhile back.

At first, the leak was minimal - just leaving a wet look around the 'seam' of the skid shield underneath the tank.  I've been wanting to get around to it - now, it's actually to the point of a small drip off one side.

At a glance, it doesn't appear as easy as the filler neck, etc.  I'm wondering if these have any habit of developping leaks at the tank seam, float or pump gaskets, etc..???  I'll be tearing it apart later this week and wonder what I might find.

Any input would be appreciated!

Thanks guys.

Sometimes mud/water/dirt/rocks can get between the tank and the plastic sheild causing the tank to rust. Replacement is about the only option.

If the hole is small enough you can soap it until you can get around to swapping it out. If you can get at the spot.

Just take a bar and scrape some shavings off it. Wipe the leak spot clean.

Rub the shavings in as best you can, trying to press some inwards with your thumb. If its the right type of hole, that will hold for quite a while before it goes again.
