Title: Carpet / Vinyl / Spray ???
Post by: SausageCat on May 13, 2009, 02:32:48 PM
Hi all,

I'm thinking of putting some form of carpet/floor/spray protection in my 97TJ.

I had the "privilege" to put a full molded carpet in my previous jeep before and it took quite a lot of work to remove everything from inside, but in the end it looked pretty good. The (+) are the looks of a full carpet. (-) when it got wet, had to stay wet, no chance to remove it without removing your seats.

Have anyone done the Vinyl or Spray?

My concerns with vinyl are: the sounds that the vinyl floor can make when rubbing against the metal tub. The spray-on (truck bed-liner) is quite expensive when done professionally by x-liner or something similar. I'm hoping that some of you have had experience with all three of the methods and can help me decide what to do?

Thanks!

Spray it with a bedliner... you can do it at home and it turns out well if you prep properly.  Then run just the bedliner in the summer and throw the carpets back in for the winter.

I will have more info after this weekend.  I am spraying my jeep TJ both inside the tub and 60% of the exterior with truck bedliner this weekend. In the past I have used Gator Gard. The Auto body supply place just sold me on a product called Raptor by U-POL. They say it is a supperior quality product. I will post up with info on how it turned out on Tuesday.

For the Raptor kit with gun I piad $160 + GST at Calgary Body Shop Supplies. List price shown on the invoice was $380 for the product. Gator Gard or Hippo would be cheaper.  I was told this is a much better product.  I will find out this weekend.  I don't know how far the four bottles will go so I may have some left. If I have some left I may be able to spray some parts for others to differ the cost, we will see how the coverage goes.   Call me on Sunday PM or Monday if you want to drop by and have a look.

Sounds like it will take the whole kit to do the application I want. I may even need more. The reviews on some of the other jeep sites were good for the product. Some photos of it on the Rubicon Users Forum.  One in black and one tinted orange.

I like a higher gloss finish and since we are painting the exterior as well I am going to try a coat of gloss black over it while it is still tacky. This process worked well over the Grator Gard I used previously.

I may give you a call on Monday afternoon to come have a look Blair. Definitely interested.  Do the sell the product on its own or do you have to buy the kit?

I did not ask if you could get the individual bottles but only noticed the full kit with 4 bottles and the hardener on the shelf. I will have a better idea of coverage by Monday. The plan is to finish the prep on Saturday and spray on Sunday. I was warned that the fumes from the product are very harsh and was told to purchase a high quality filter mask that I did.  It may be a good idea for two or three to share a kit or kits if only doing the interior of the tubs.

Yes, call and drop by on Monday.   I will be out on the patio sanding down the new cage for paint. The jeep will be sitting in the garage curing.

I have also added this as a must do project for this year..... I have heard of stories/rumours/myths, about some people using a petroleum based product and having their jeep catch fire from the heat caused by the exaust system.... any truth to this?

I had my beast 3 days and riped the carpet out of it and used the  roll on kit from canadian tire .
worked fine for the last 2 years
But(always gotta be a but)   Need to  re-apply  it now , so when i get ready to do it  i need to find a more stronger thing to use .
seems that metal(propane tanks etc) seems to tear it off after awhile
