Mods for the '09 season are finally underway for my own rig. This post can catch everyone up that's been pm'ing me and calling wondering what I'm up to. Here's the catch up on it....
First up was to fix both front knuckles. Didn't know it but when I came down off the Tower of Terror at the Expo I broke both front steering knuckles and blew the top right out of a solid alum high steer arm...

You talking the Highriders Challenge?
-
You talking the Highriders Challenge?
ya thats that one
-
That is one sweet rig!
-
I don't think so their is still a bundle of work to be done, to be trail ready, then shake downs and tweaking.
the 500 is not running yet, and no drive shafts.
-
Will it actually crawl over rocks, or will they just scurry away in fright when they see this monster coming? :D
-
Which way is the fan gonna blow? Will it fit between the fuel cell and the rad?
Looking awesome Brink, my itch to do mine has become a serious, nagging, itch, and only more cowbell (err, fab work) can cure it!
-
Fans will be pullers....mounted between the rad and cell. There's also a heat shield mounted about 1" from the cell to keep the hot air from heating the fuel.
No chance for Highriders this year. Still few weeks away.
Not much of an update. Been building another jeep for the last few weeks. It's out now and mines back in though. Been dreading the floors so I decided to get them out of the way first...

Engine cage almost done. Be 3 more tubes near the firewall running from one side to the other. Need to mount the battery, new intake manifold, and fuel injection to check all the clearances first.
Big area at the back will be home for a couple coolers with fans I think. Probably do some aluminum over the front area looking trick...

Words cannot describe your work Eric. I think I am just gonna haul my junk down to you and you can build it for me.

Anytime guys. Been a busy winter with work in the garage.
With mine nearly done I should have some room again soon. 1 Cage to do and a set of gears/arb to install....but generally I can work things in.
Let me know if I can help with anything.
-
please tell me it runs ;D
I want to hear this thing before the exhaust is put on.
-
Close.....
-
Dash is pretty wraped up now. Side panels on the console and some wiring left....
Had to build a throtle bracket for the TBI. Couldn't make it boring right?

Buddy Phil came like 4hrs each way today to help me make this thing fire up. Went from what looked like an imposible rats nest of wires, to simply dealing with things one at a time. Seemed really intimidating to me but with help from Phil it all went smooth. After a couple tries and a couple minor changes we came up with this....

Very nice work all around, your skills are wicked
-
Now quite fooling around and go wheeling will you ;D . Nice work man .
-
Dash almost finished up. Just got the panels on the sides of the console left. Switches are covered and the CD player is also. Kill switch and rear steer mounted now also...

Actually drove it on and off the trailer to get it down for new driveshafts. Just not thinking the 1310's will hold up behind the new powerplant. Here it is sitting on it's own...

Just a quick update for those that are asking.
Swaybar is on in front....
And the driveshafts from Alberta Driveline are done...
Spent 2 days on a chasis dyno trying to tune the fuel injection system on the Caddy. We had major software problems and are still working on it. Hopefully we can get that done soon so I can get this thing on a trail like it belongs
-
So the update is that I've had some issues with the engine. Massive overheating....followed by bottom end knock. Turned out to be 3 rod bearings had spun. So out it came and off to the machine shop it went.
So engine is still out. Finally got around to ordering the parts for the rebuild. Maximum Torque Specialties is hooking me up on everything to rebuild it plus a hotter cam, and upgraded valve-train.
New higher performance fans are also on their way from Hendrick Motorsports. Big thanks to Scott for the hookup on them. Also sending me a new FAST EFI system. It's completely self tuning so no more trips to the chassis dyno, unless I'm just curious about numbers. Uses a wide-band O2 and constantly tunes permanently. Should never be able to get the engine out of tune period.
New front steering also arrived. Always like the single ended ram's price, but never the look of it or the mounting location. New PSC double ended ram needed a new home on the front axle. Also meant major reworking of the tracbar to clear it. The ram mounts right where the tracbar used to run. After plenty of head scratching the tracbar found its new home. Need to add some missing jam nuts, and swap some grade 5 hardware for grade 8 but it's pretty much good to go....
truss with steering on it at full compression....

Modified the high steer arms to make them double sheer tonight. Much like the Ballistic arms except mine are under the arm instead of over. Same idea of a bolt on second piece to provide the bolt with proper support on the other side of the heim....(yes the grade 5 hardware needs to be changed out)

Engine is back from the machine shop. Took the time to paint it up and get it ready for reassembly. Should go back together in about a week using the nice big boxes of parts from MTS. Pretty much a stock rebuild except for the upgraded cam, lifters, and valve springs.....

i think i just wet my pants ......excuse me for a minute ............................................................. that thing looks sweet and mean all at the same instant
-
I've moved the rad up behind my head. Couple reasons....obviously looking for more airflow after having cooling issues already, but also looking for a little more usable space in the buggy for tools/food/parts and stuff. Leaves lots of room under it for that. Also took the rad in to have a little leak fixed....rad shop tells me it's NFG go figure. So I have a new AFCO aluminum rad on the way. Biggest double pass they make. In the meanwhile it changes things from the AN style fittings on the old rad to normal inlet outlets. So the plumbing got changed.....
Also took out the tiny 2.5" exhaust that had been run and replaced it with some 3.5"...
-
Shock mounts all needed changing also. I've gone from the 2.0 remote res coilovers to 2.5" Piggybacks. The lengths are different for the same amount of travel so things needed to be moved.
Rears neded top and bottoms done...

Fronts I just had to do the tops. Which of course snowballs into work on the engine cage and some openings in the hood for the hoops to peek through....

Motor is done and back in where it belongs. It measured out with the plastigauge perfectly within factory spec during assembly. Bolted back into the engine bay without a hitch...

-
Finished the exhaust. All 3.5" and used a Magnaflow round muffler. Pretty much straight through, may add a resonator after the muffler or on of Dynatech's tips with the silencer in it depending on decibel levels when the engine fires...
One seriously tight fit in places...

Tore out all the wiring that was done before. It was all just crimps and maybe a little quick and questionable. Now it is all soldered conections and very dependable. Built a new fuse/relay center also. Completely waterproof....

and you made such a nice spot to pack a lunch too! ;)
very creative way to get it done, nice and simple.
-
Nice clean install, and where you can get to as well, nice. What colour did you use for the block and valve covers? Looks great!!!
-
Thanks guys.
Block/valve covers are the same Orange Crush Pearl Endura that the jeep was shot in. Heads are just regular Alum high heat engine paint.
-
Needed to build a new mount for the alternator. Changing from the huge but low power Caddy unit to more modern 1 wire Chevy high output model. The Chevy mounts totally the oposite way on the bottom....

Prep for the season has started......
Destroyed my Dana 300 last time out (october). Was climbing a wall and it just let loose and locked up. Finally dropped it and pulled the cover to see what went wrong....

Noticed late last season that 3 rosettes were leaking on the rear 60. Probably meant that the tubes were moving a little by now also. Took off the old little truss and added some structure, plus a mount for a new double ended ram....
