Title: Mudflaps ?
Post by: Jeepster on May 28, 2009, 09:35:29 AM
So I got pulled over yesterday between Airdrie and Balzac by a Peace Officer.
He told me that I need to put mudflaps on my Jeep.

I dont recall seeing any other lifted Jeeps with Mudflaps, unless I am blind  ;D

Any of you have Mudflps on ? If so what ones do you use and how did you attach them ?

Thanks

**EDIT** I guess I may have to order a pair of these:

Yes, I have removable ones . They are on an L shaped  bracket that drops through the point were my custom bumper mounts.  I will post a photo tonight if I get a chance.

i will be riggin' something up like that this weekend too. i keep gettin pulled over and 'educated'.   eventually i'm gonna get pulled over and an officer will not believe that the larger flares and flaps are 'on order from Modern'

A friend and I got pulled over near Cochrane for not having mudflaps (hes running Super Swamper 38's) and to add to the cops 'sunny disposition' he proceeded to show us the huge chip we put in his windshield  :-X

Now we have a cheepy pair of flaps we picked up for 25 bucks from Can-trash.
Only problem is they keep ripping off on the highway... ???
Pretty hard to attach them since we cut out the fenders to fit the tires.

I cant add flaps since I modded my rear bumper so it wouldnt fill up with mud.  I'll never go out on May long for this exact reason.

This is of topic but does anyone know why the sherrifs have hutterity vans and a RV'ish unit. The only thing that I've ever seen them do is write out tickets. They might as well be driving clown cars. oh I mean smart cars.

And I've got two mudflap tickets, and argued my way out of another, good thing I was pulled over right in front of a dealership, and was able to point out five new trucks rolling out of the lot that needed flaps just as much as I needed them.

I've had the soft style factory flaps front and rear since taking delivery. I've since gone to 31's and the rear flaps just clear the tire.  I've since added Warn 7" flares. I've been stopped in FIVE Checkstops here since Christmas day, two of which included complete walk-arounds of the vehicle. Never a word about the legality of my Jeep.

Yes, very odd. I hadn't been through one in literally seven or eight years since one in Edmonton. They've been blitzing like crazy here. They sit (aside from the Christmas Day one) on Gaetz Avenue at the bottom of either North or South Hill, the last three down by the Ramada / Tim Hortons near the bus depot northbound at the bottom of the South Hill. You're committed to the hill down and walk right into their loving arms. As it splits to three lanes they angle pylons in the centre lane to make parking spaces to direct vehicles into. They have the medical trailer there and a row of tow trucks. I get directed into one of the spots every time. I think they assume I'm some young kid in a Jeep before they see me in the dark. They've checked paperwork every time and did the walk around twice. No trouble except time consuming.

You wheel a rig?
You should have mudflaps.
Public perception will not change until we help change it.

Washing your rig asap before city driving and putting flaps on promotes a responsible image.

Even i as a jeeper HATE seeing dirty mud filled rigs and big rigs with no flpas. i know they are the cause of my cracked windshield. They also cause me grief when i am on my motor cycle.

Yeah, i know...18 wheelers, etc spray gravel but guess what?
18 wheelers are not BANNED from OHV areas.

Put em on, wash your rig and maybe there will be trails left to be saved.
And yes, they make your rig look hideous :)

well i picked up some cheap flaps from autovalue the other day, but after putting them up against the iroks, they barely cover the tread (Immortal had a good laugh at this)

so i think i'm going with dually flaps.  fawk it

Just made a set of mudflaps last Sunday.  I used a piece of rubber flooring from PA, rivited to a piece of metal flat stock ,secured with removable bolts to the bumper.  Nice and legal.

Total cost was around 10 bucks.

From the chatter around the Jeep club the PoPo tend to zero in on no mudflaps more than other minor infractions.

Go to kenworth or some truckstop like that flaps are cheep there and they WILL cover the whole tire

total cost was about $30... $25 for the right sized flaps, and $5 for the tubing. On and off in about 3 seconds... 2.5 on, 0.5 off.

nice i might have to make some of these .. whats the rule for fender flares
can the tire be exposed at all

drop a coin down the side of the flare.... if it hits the tire the flare is too small.
with the flaps... they need to cover the whole width of the tire. just ask waytec... the po-po took a straight edge to his.

A quick and easy mud flap system, is to take a thick peice of ruber or mat cut to size, get a length of chain and bolt thrue the mat to the chain. You can then connect it to the bumper by either running 2 "eye bolts" thru the bumper and connecting the flaps with small carbiners, allowing for super fast connect/disconnect, or you can bolt the chain directly to the bumper.
