Title: Towing Capacity
Post by: FullMetalJeep on June 05, 2009, 10:42:53 AM
I am considering simplifying my life and opening the gates of absolute freedom of mobility by buying a small trailer to live in. But, I need to pull it with my TJ.

Anyone know what the max tow weight would be for a TJ? I do have a rear 44 and I think I will drop 4.88 gears in it.

It's the wheelbase that will limit you with a TJ.  You aren't gonna want to pull anything much more than a tent trailer or a boler style trailer.  I think the limit is offically 2000lbs for the normal wheel base TJ.. and about 3500 for the unlimited with its longer wheelbase

The TJ stock  is rated to  tow a 2000 pounds trailer with a low profile.  With a lift you may want to stay below that. The bigger the lift on the short wheel base the more unstable the combination. I tow a 10' tent trailer with my TJ. The weight on the trailer is approximately  1750lb.  It tows it fine but under braking feels a little unstable. The trailer tends to push the jeep around. Last year the e-breaks on the trailer were not working. I plan to get them fixed ASAP before towing thought the mountains to BC on vacation. Also with a lifted TJ and any full height trailer you may find a cross wind is the issue. You have lots of power to pull it the limiting factor is the stability of the jeep under braking or in a cross wind.

Officially 2000 lbs and unlimiteds are 3500 lbs

I have towed my 16' powerboat back from our cabin in BC and the biggest problem is braking
