Hey guys! So I was driving to a co-workers house tonight (my 1990 YJ, 4.2l, 5spd) and I went through their back-alley, and when I came onto the street, I guess I let the clutch out too hard and when it went from dirt to pavement, there was a HUGE clunk. My roommates and I were driving home on Deerfoot tonight and the entire way there was an intense clunking sound, especially when turning the wheel slightly to the left. It's only when the engine is under load does it clunk, never when I'm coasting. I put it in 4wd to take some of the pressure off the rear axle, hoping it would make a difference, which it did, but only slightly. The clunks weren't nearly as hard hitting, and were fewer of them. I'm not sure if this is a transmission problem, or a rear axle, but I need to get this fixed ASAP as this is my daily driver!
Any info on this would be greatly appreciated!
Jeff
(Pretty happy I didn't take this out to Wiprous for my camping trip!)

Sounds like your dana 35 rear end bit the dust time for an axle swap

U-joint? Mine had weird clunking under load as well.
-
If it is my rear end, and ideas what I should swap it to, and possibly cost?
I know it's not my U-joint, cause right after it happened, I was under my jeep checking things out and the U-joints don't have much play in them, just the usual...
Another side note, my jeep was leaking oil from day 1, but now it's leaking A LOT more, to the point it's parked till I figure out all this crap!

Thanks for the tips guys, I'll give that a try as soon as I can Tinkerer! Yeah, sorry, it is an engine oil leak, which seems to have gotten worse since my "incident." I'm thinking rear main seal? It likes to drip onto my exhaust and burn, which stinks, and gets inside, so driving when the weather is crap and windows up sucks!
Jeep is located in the parking lot of my apartment in Acadia.

Do you happen to have a red/maroon YJ? If so, I think I was sitting next to you at a stoplight (Acadia/Southland) last week. If that was you, then yes...that oil leak is indeed cauing some pretty good stink ;)

Haha, it probably is a pretty bad stank... But no, mine is black, and kinda rusty :P
