Post by: Pookapotamus on June 18, 2009, 09:53:27 PM
so my wife's xj has a clunck when you put it in gear or on the highway when you let off and on the gas. i am thinking ujoints although they seem fairly tight what does every one else think?

u joints lol.  driveshaft something or other.

u joints shouldn't be 'fairly' tight. if they move at all they are bad......

I thought the Clunks where all part of the fun
...it's just not the same without em ;)

Also try checking your motor mounts or the tranny mount

The noise could be wear in your diff, between the ring and pinion teeth.

Mine does the same thing on the highway.  It's wear/play in the rear carrier inside the diff.

ok so i changed the fluid in her tranny cause it was black and flowed like water, gave it a new strap kit on the diff checked all the u joints and it still clunks quite hard going into drive.

if its not the u joints it could be a trany problem, oil shouldn't be black in a automatic trany, did it smell burnt, maybe the bands are loose

And an ARB air locker while I'm at it.  :D

the pinion has a little slack in it, but the clunk seems more exesive for that amount of play, it does idle high when you first start it but it does calm down, but does not seem to make a difference for the clunk.

hmm well this is my wifes and it has not been lifted the only thing that has been done to it is the swap of a dana 44 in the rear, and it does not sound like a body hit but i will crawl under and look into it maybe her tranny mount is shot.
