Hey guys,
I was just wondering what year range did the Dana HP 30 come in Cherokee's?
-
84-99 high pinion and 2000-2001 they used low pinion
-
I think it was about 93-94ish though when they switched to a one piece passenger side axle which is what you want
-
So all xj's from 84-99 had a HP?
What do you mean a one piece axle? The shafts from my 91 and 98 are the same.
-
what he means is that some axles between 84-91 had vacuum disconnects, basically a 2 piece inner axle shaft and all 92+ are non-disconect. the non-disconect axles are a preferred choice.

Did they really have a 2 piece axle shaft, on the drivers side? I was thinking, how the hell you would get a on piece axle on a front axle, eliminate the u joint? lol JK!
What is the prefered year cherokee axle to build on? (HP)

The HO and the 97+ 4.0L engines are the same horse power.... I like the interior of the older style XJs better, but like the newer style exteriors more than the older ones. 97+ have the 29 spline axle shafts (preferred over the 27 spline of the older ones).

Only the passenger side was a 2 piece shaft and it was just the shaft that was split not the whole housing. They did this instead of locking hubs to keep the front diff from spinning the front driveshaft. Later they found it ddin't make that big of a difference to have the front shaft spinning all the time so they removed it and made it a one piece design.
Any year cherokee makes for a good build up. I like the '87-'91 for the old Renix AMC fuel injection system but thats only cause I worked on it a lot so am very familiar with it. The '92+ HOs are good as well. '87-89s had a crappy 5spd tranny that had an internal slave cylinder so auto was the preferred choice for those years. '89.5 and up got the AX15 5spd which is a decent tranny. However the AW4 automatic that was offered is almost bullet proof so that would be my choice, plus you got better gears, 3.07s with the stick and 3.55s with the auto.

The 92 XJ is an awesome jeep, mine has over 405 on it and it gets beat on hard and never breaks (just the u joints lol).
Im basically looking just for the best "stock" axle to build to swap in to the front of my TJ... since I cant find a rubi d44 then Im guessing a HP D30.

Will the spindle/brakes from an 05 Dana 30 swap straight on to a 97 HP Dana 30 inner knuckles?
