Title: aw4 tranny fluid
Post by: S-FLY on June 20, 2009, 04:43:54 PM
So I know you should only use Dextron III/Mercon for the AW4.  I was at Part Source today and they had Dextron V and VI.  I asked for Dextron III and he pointed at the Shell ATF which had smaller writing saying "For vehicles previously serviceable by Dextron III/Mercon".  The ATF part scares me...

Is this the right stuff I should be buying?  It was $15.99 for 4 liters. :o

I work at a parts store, maybe I could help you. That Shell ATF is probably a "Multi-vehicle" ATF. and will work just fine in the AW-4. I know i sell quaker state and castrol multi's that work in transmissions that require Dexron and Mercon III. The V and VI are meant for alot of newer vehicles, and you don't want that in your AW-4.

Trans fluid is usually expensive, except for lower brands like the Walmart Tech-2000 stuff. Just make sure you get the right one!

That's my question, basically is this Shell ATF the proper stuff.  Since it's like a Mercon/Dextron replacement.  I've rather use actual Mercon/Dextron III -- does anyone know where I can buy it?

Just picked up a tranny cooler from PnP.  I wanna install this and change my tranny pan gasket and change the fluid, but still not sure if this is the right stuff to buy.
