so i stripped the interior of the jeep yesterday getting it ready for bed lining, the front is in really good shape just a couple of rust spots, but the back....

so how do i go about fixing this (cheeply)? any suggestions? i was a mechanic not a body man so i am a little out of my element here. :-\

I had a similar problem with my old CJ. I did some research for my rusted floorboards, and used a product called " POR15"
It comes in a can, and you apply it with a brush. It hardens and supposedly stops further rust. It was pretty solid .
It can also be painted.
Another cheap alternative is to cut out the rusted areas and patch the holes up with sheetmetal and some rivets.

POR-15 ;D
-
Nothing "cures" rot , it only slows it. Cut out the the steel around the holes, replace it by welding in new steel, take the flake rust off, if you want sandblast it, then coat it with a product like POR 15 or other rust inhibitor. If you prime it make sure you use a Top coat paint as primer is porous and will only start to rust again a month down the road.
-
i am planning on using the same raptor kit that blair used to line his interior, will i still be able to if i use por 15?
-
I don't see why not? I had my "butchered" POR-15 and 'ghetto sheetmetal" I can't weld worth a damn interior Rhino lined.
-
ok so where is the best place to buy sheet metal?

My opinion
Correcting my earlier comment in the PM. Now I see the rust sand blast the floor, get rid of the rust. Then fix any holes and use a good primer that etches to the metal. If that is just surface rust the sand blaster at Consolidated compressor will make fast work of it. Gone. If the rust is deeper then you may have more holes to fix.
Be careful to tarp off the dash the sand will get everywhere.

i took a wire wheel to it last night and found a couple more holes just little pencil sized ones. alot of it was surface rust, i do have a couple of holes to patch but what should i do about the small ones?
-
You don't really need a lot of sheetmetal to fix your rust problems. A lot of shops that utilize sheetmetal have "steel bins" and you could always get some fairly big pieces for your XJ. It's free! Might want to ask first though. Worst case scenario? Go to Crap Tire's autobody section. They have small sheets for under $25 called "u-fix it" and it should suffice; plus you get that "funny money" for buying crap there.
ps. You may have to hop in one of those steel bins and root around for an appropriate size of sheetmetal. DO NOT wear flip-flops!

dont plug em those are drainage holes :) :P

but if i plug all the holes it will float like the top gear boys did! ;D

dana is this the xj I saw? or your wifes?
-
its my xj, the wife has me fixing other problems on hers ::)
-
If the XJ is like the Tj it should have the double layer of sheet metal on the floors, with a gap between the two. If so I would be more concerned about the rust you dont see on the in between the two layers. even if you sandblast and prime the top the rust may just eat the floor out from the under side.
-
i think it is only the one layer i will check tonight.

Depending on how much you need I may have some chunks you can have :) or if its still driveable maybe just stop over with it and let me see if I may be able to whip up a quick patch panel PM me
-
if it were me i would grind off the rust because i have no way to get to a sand blaster, then i would paint it with some trim clade rust paint, then throw down a chunk of dimond plate with rivits, then bed line it it would look good and all your rust problems are gone.
thats what i would do. at big horn sheet meatal in canmore dimond plate is 2 buck a square foot i get a good deal though work but i'm sure you chould get it cheap some were.

I just patched up my floors on my YJ with sheetmetal from princess auto @ 22 bucks for 24" x 48" sheet using bad welds and machine screws.
-
What does it look like now after hitting hit with the wire wheel? From the one picture it looks like the left side by the wheelwell would be very thin after the prep work. Might want to consider cleaning and priming the current floor really well and then just skinning it.
-
it does look pretty thin after cleaning and i totaly thought about skinning it but what do i put between the old and the new so that it does not hold water and just rust out the new? i actually think skinning it would be the best because after i bed line it, it will look sweet
