Title: Air condition compressor
Post by: McClare on July 25, 2009, 07:30:17 PM
2001 XJ Sport, 4.0L, 4x4, Auto, A/C

Bought the vehicle in December of last year and I've had the A/C working fine the whole time. Recently something at the front of the engine was making bad noises. Changed the idler pulley and it did nothing, but noticed that the A/C pulley would wobble when the clutch engaged. I got the system drained and changed the clutch in the compressor. A new compressor is $500 that I don't have. The wobble went away and the noise went away. Engine runs and sounds good but the A/C doesn't work obviously because I have no refrigerant. I took it to a mechanic and he said that the compressor is now shot because the bearings are gone. Is he telling the truth? It cost me $120 for the diagnostic and I don't want to pay that again at another mechanic just for a second opinion.

Any help is greatly appreciated.

PS. If anyone has a working air conditioning compressor for sale I would be a good citizen and take it off your hands for a price.

Pm the Machinist(Jamey) He has an AC compressor off of his 2000 XJ that he is never going to use again.
You can also try Immortal on this site. He is a good AC technician. He may be of some help to you.
