Title: Dana 44 owners-help please
Post by: RACKMAN on August 01, 2009, 11:33:18 AM
I was wondering if someone with a dana 44 rear end with drum brakes could check for play in the wheel bearings....jack up the rear end, grab the tire at the 12 and 6 o'clock positions and check for any play. I recently installed a brand new set of Superior chromo shafts and had a reputable shop press on the bearings, but I have a tiny bit of play, maybe 1/8", of wobble type movement....it's exactly the same on both sides! Is some bit of play normal? I tighten down the retaining plate to spec using a criss-cross pattern and I can't see the shop that pressed on the bearings screwing up something that simple. Any input would be great. Thanks.

I have a XJ with a Dana 44 with drums. I just put it in the air and performed the test. There was no noticeable play to speak of. I have a Ford Ranger that has some play in it. The dealership mechanics told me that some play is normal.
