Title: Opinions wanted from full time rear locker owners
Post by: cablesmurf on December 01, 2005, 11:23:22 AM
Gonna put a LockRight in the rear of the ZJ. It is my wife's DD and I don't want to make it uncomfortable or dangerous for her to drive. She has an NP242 Full time and part time 4wd. I'm looking for some opinions on this setup or similar. I have only ever had a lockRight in the fromnt of one of my XJ's and I know it pretty much killed 4wd for winter driving.

Well, ill tell you this much, it takes some getting used to.  Very easy to swing the back of your truck out of your street, lol.  But from a standstill its great.  Combination of 4wd and lockers makes for some good winter driving.  But beware as if your too giving on gas you can get yourself into trouble.
And that locker i gave you thats goin in the back of your zj is great.  I have another one in the back of my yj, and it works wonderfully.  Its much better than drivin my 06 civic on the slippery roads.

Drive safe.

if you don't want to make it uncomfortable or dangerous for her to drive, why don't you wait till after winter to put the locker in. I have a 93 yj locked in the rear and it can make wither driving very tough. Almost every corner the back end wants to slide out.

I say do it!  With your longer wheel base and full time 4WD the locker in the back will be great.  I fun a Detroit in the back of my TJ and when it is in 4WD it is really nice to drive.  I would rather have a predictable locked rear end then an unpredictable open rear end.
My 2 cents.

I have an Aussie Locker in the back of my YJ, part-time 4WD, 31" TrXus MTs.  I don't bother with 4WD on the road or city.  On icy side streets the rear end wants to step out any time there is a hint of a turn, it does this much more easily compared to when it was an open diff.  I'm careful with the gas but I like it to drift out and then I counter steer and keep it slidin' just for the fun, of course no parked cars around to hit     Would your wife enjoy the same antics?  If so, enjoy  :!:

Lockrite does not reccomend their locker to be used in Daily Drivers.

I had one in my scrambler and I loved it.  However the occasional loud bang from the rear end would startle me from time to time.  It is also not as harsh when connected to an auto tranny.  If your wife really knows how to drive it would be a great addition to her vehicle.  If she is a timid or not great at recovering from a skid maybe not a great idea.

I'm running a mini spool in my 92 XJ with a dana 44. Up here we have snow and ice for about 6 months of the year.It just takes a while to get the hang of it I think it's a blast to drive.
