Is it normal for the electric fan to kick on when you turn the heater on defrost? Does not matter if the engine is hot or cold. It kicks out as soon as i put it to the vents or floor. 98 sport 4.0L. Any ideas?

yes this is normal. what it is doing is drying the air that it is using to defrost your windsheild. this helps to defrost better.
at least that is what i have been told.
-
Dana, sort of.... not really. You should smack whomever told you that... or, did you misinterpret?
Watch your A/C compressor when you put it in defrost. It should kick on... briefly.
Turning the A/C on dries out the air, thus helping to remove the moisture on your windshield....
The electric fan is the condenser fan for your A/C... if it doesn't come on with the Defrost/A/C you have bigger problems.
So, yes!! This is normal, and proper. Noisy as hell, aren't they? LOL!!!
