Post by: jeeptastic on September 02, 2009, 07:13:23 PM
I know I missed last weekend but I am curious to see if anybody would be up for a day run on Sunday. I know there are a few guys talking about heading out. Just wanted to see who else was in.

Can someone give me directions to get to McLean Store. Is there only one store? what kind of store is it?

I am hoping for rain because it was VERY dry and dusty last weekend.  A bit of rain would do wonders to help keep it interesting

Rich... These are pretty decent directions to the Mclean Creek store.

1) Drive West on 22x past the turn off to Bragg Creek (dont turn right/North to Bragg Creek unless ya need gas)
2) Continue on 22x until you see a left turn & sign that says "McLean Creek" (about 5 to 10km past Bragg creek turn off...from memory)
3) Take that left and continue until you see the "provincial government" looking building on your right (about 2 to 5km from memory)

That is where I believe the Mclean store to be... having said that... I have only been there once so use at your own risk.

Fantastic... I guess I will bring a buddy to hop out and be the tow strap guy because I dont have a winch. Dont worry he was going to come anyways.

Are we doing that run?

If you did Fisher East in 45 minutes, you must have been in a helicopter.

Even when it's completely frozen, it's longer than 45 minutes.

Some of the ruts are too deep and too long to get a tow rig in front of you without getting it stuck also.  Better to have a winch for this trail.
Title: Re: September 6th
Post by: JackstandJohnny on September 04, 2009, 09:02:07 AM
if your nimble and locked you can get around stuff. keep in mind the 'bypasses' themselves can be hairraisng obstacles; there are spots that will make you poop your pants.

i'm not kidding.........

run it in the fall first. then all the nasty stuff is frozen. then you can judge for yourself what type of rig should be runnin it........

that would be awefully entertaining considering thats a 40" plus trail now hahaha

beetter start modding your 33" shoed, flexless XJ then eh buddy?

Some of the ruts are too deep and too long to get a tow rig in front of you without getting it stuck also.  Better to have a winch for this trail.

Also bear in mind that some of the ruts are so deep that you don't want to be winching a "small" rig through them under any circumstances. you'll easily have water part-way up the windshield.

JohnnyC is right about the bypasses. Some of them are VERY interesting, especially for longer wheelbase rigs (XJ's, unlimited TJ's and JK's).

I am sure if we all meet at the store in the morning on Sunday or Monday we can figure out a run that everyone can do...or we can spilt into groups if anyone actually wants to go do Fisher East...I imagine we will stay west since we are a stock 08 Rubicon...

I have always wanted to go to mclean, just never made the time.
Do we need a cb for the run? I ordered one, it just hasn't got here yet.

Make sure you have your spare and front/rear tow points and you're good to go.  CB is great have but won't be required for these runs.

So is the plan to do this really tough run?
Title: Re: September 6th
Post by: muffintop on September 05, 2009, 07:21:38 AM
If I had to bet the $20 I have in my wallet right now... I would say that we will end up not doing Fisher East (FE).

Having said that... a few of the more "seasoned folks" and their "well modified Jeeps" may elect to do FE and take a Newbie or two if their Jeeps aren't completely stock (lift, tires, winch, tow points, etc).

Like Jenn said... we'll see when we get to the store and may end up splitting this into a couple of different runs?

So what time is everyone meetin at the store on Sunday? I'd love to do a challenging run but Fisher East sounds like quicksand and alligators probably snipers in the woods as well...... just to make sure no one finishes.

I had a squealing sound that I thought was mud and/or rocks stuck in the brakes... so instead of going wheelin today... I took it apart, cleaned & inspected... only to find the drivers side unit bearing (front axle) has a "huge" amount of play in it, has lost its lubrication and is pretty much shot.

I'm not sure how dangerous it is to drive around with a unit bearing in that kind of shape... but man am I glad I decided not to go wheelin.

What did I learn?

1) When ya start with a 190,000km Jeep, rebuilt the axles and put bigger tires on it... while your in there... replace the unit bearings with new ones ($400)
2) A "quick and dirty" way of checking unit bearings without jacking your Jeep up is ... start in the back (even though there are no unit bearings back there on a stocker) it will give you a frame of reference. Push & pull hard sideways on the top of the tire and feel for play (none in my case) other side on the back was the same... no play, passenger front I could feel a bit of play in the unit bearing, drivers side front... Whoa... bingo... HUGE play.
3) If you have a sound you think is mud/rocks related... dont assume... check it out.

I would suspect the bit of front end shimmy/wobble I have at 80 & 110km/hr will go away with new unit bearings

Just thought I'd share  :P

Thanks to the three other Jeeps(Jen, Jim and John) that made it out today. We had a blast. I am so Amazed with what my Jeep was able to accomplish.

I think I am way over the mud and water... The next time we go out I am putting out a bead of silicone or something around my distributor cap. Thank You everyone for being so patient.

The real fun was making it to the Top of the World. I still cant get over that steps in the rock that we went over.

I am really looking forward to the next time we head out.

Thanks Again.
