I know this is not stictly jeep related but I thought I would see if anyone would be interested. I have been researching a number of types of LED replacement bulbs for my motorhome. When we go camping the lights are the biggest drain on power - and even with solar panels lighting is problematic.
I looked for direct replacement bulbs, and although they are available they are expensive. After lots of looking I stumbled across a company that sells LEDS and the voltage regulators required to drive them. Eventually I found a fellow that had done this prior and wrote this article

So I was thinking of giving this a shot and was wondering if anybody else is interested?

I wouldn't suggest using LED for ambient lighting. I work at a electrical and lighting wholesale and although LED lighting is efficient and very bright when you are looking at it, it will not light up the area around the bulb. So to make it simple great for brake lights not so good for lighting a room.

I looked at the lights from superbright, and I have seen some direct replacement led 12v bulbs but they are quite expensive (typically afound $20). As mentioned LED's light is quite focused and does not scatter as well as a bulb...but the power consumption is attractive. There are a few companies that offer lower power LED's in arrays that light better - but these seem less expensive - especially if you buy a few.
I think I will give it a shot and at worst I'll have some LED's that won't work as lights, just wanted to see if anybody else wanted to give it a shot :).
