Title: Any body running these knuckles?
Post by: Impact on October 05, 2009, 07:55:28 PM
Hey guys,

Just wondering if anybody is running these Reid Racing knuckles and any thoughts about them.

Reid makes some of the best knuckles on the market. I've never worked on the 30 ones but I am sure they would be a quality unit.

The only issue is how much money do you spend on a 30 before it becomes to much.

I'd wait until I broke a stock knuckle first, then I would replace it with stock...and continue like this forever and ever!  :)

I am sure you can find 30 knuckles around for dirt cheap and/or free.

I was originally just going to put Chromo shafts in the D30 when I was going to change the gears out and put some 4.5 to 5.5 wheel spacers to compensate for the different rim size... But with these knuckles you have the options of going with the proper bolt pattern, manual hubs, high steer arms etc... I don't plan on swapping to bigger axles any time soon so it would be nice to have a D30 thats functional and lasts... when does it become too expensive to upgrade a D30????

A HP D30 can be built very reliably for tires upto 35" and if you plan are staying in that size range for a while, then I would invest the money

I would be using a Cherokee HP D30 to put in... 37's are going on...

To much tire. The balljoints will still die a grisly death on a regular basis and drive you crazy.

If you wheel hard even chromos with CTM's have a potential to fail regulaly.

Hubs will definately break on a regular basis.

Your ring and pinion may be subject to failure on a regular basis.

Even a fully pimped hp 30 is not up to the task of 37's. And, by the time you do all of this...................

Super 30, chomo shafts, and gears 2000$
Knuckles, crossover, hi steer, hubs, assist, 4000$
Trussing 200-500$

You are into a good aftermarket axle that can actually handle 37's and will not run you into the ground in maintenance and trail repairs.

Lastly, no stock wheelbase TJ should be on 37's. You will start to severly compromise your climbing stability for a small gain in clearence.

Rules of thumb regarding tire diamter and wheelbase

35" 93-99"
37" 102-105"
42" 106-110"
44" and up, 112" and up

The low end of those scales are what you can get away with and still have fair climbing stability. The highends are for those that climb a lot and want to maximize their stability.

Hope that helps.

That definitely helps!
The shitty thing is that I already have the lift kit and the tires/rims...

bills right. i'm running 36" iroks (37" tall) and yea, my front end as it sits needs : all new ball joints and unit bearings, bigger axle ujoints.  ask any one who was out with us on the last run when my front end decided to give in. we were 10 minutes on the trail.

you can 'getaway'with running 37s on the front D30 however its only  amatter of time until bad things happen. i i got a year of good useagel and thought its possible to run on the D30 but not anymore; now its rebuild everything time...... just be happy it doesn't happen on a nasty part of the trail
