The project consists of moving the fence line along an unsustainable section on Bypass Trail which is located on the south side of McLean pond. This section has very deep ruts making east – west access difficult. The trail will moved to go through the trees, allowing for better drainage, a more sustainable trail for all OHV users and allow the current section of trail to be reclaimed. There is also an issue with water and silt draining into the pond. Concrete culverts will be installed to fix this issue.
The project will happen on Oct 24 and 25. We will be meeting at the McLean creek store at 9:00 am on each day. We will work until 5:00 on Saturday and hopefully be able to complete everything by mid afternoon on Sunday.
We figure we need at least 20 volunteers on each day. We will have three groups working in separate areas. A small group will be working with the contractor with the culvert installation. A second group will be working to remove the existing fence line; removing fence posts and rolling up sections of wire. The last group will be installing the fence posts and wire along the new trail.
Volunteers are responsible for bringing their own food and water for the day. Volunteers are also responsible for bringing and wearing appropriate clothing and footwear as per the weather conditions. Parts of the trail are muddy. Safety boots, safety glasses and leather gloves are required when working around heavy equipment and are highly recommended everyone.
Tools needed on site.
• Hammers
• Wire Cutters
• Hi-lifts with chains for removing posts
• Shovels
• Axe/Hatchets
We will also need some volunteers to help with following:
• A vehicle capable of towing the post ponder to and from the store. From there we can use a jeep.
• A couple of utility trailers may also be helpful with moving wire and posts on site.

i am in! just not sure what day.

Camping is definite possiblity ;D

Can a stock rig get to the project?
Absolutely! No worries there. Should have mentioned that the trail being fixed is Bypass Trail. It runs along the south end of the pond. We will have stock rig access into the site.

Thanks.
It would be good to see the Four Wheel Stampeders out helping.
i understand the Waiporous attitude but losing Maclean would be devastating. Any American or Ontario wheeler would be stoked to have a legal non paying park like Maclean, lets all get on board and support this work project.

Is there something that I can do to help out between now and then? That's the weekend that I'm scheduled to fly back out to the middle east :(
-
Thanks.

Great idea! I'll pm Gunther.
Is there something that I can do to help out between now and then?
Thanks for the offer. I thnk we have eveything under control at this point but...
Can you try to do something about the weather? A nice warm, dry weekend would great and this October has been a bit off. ;)
-
I will be out for Saturday AM but will need to run after lunch for a family function in town . I will be back out to help on Sunday for the day.
Who else is coming out for one or both of the days to help?
-
I'm trying to be there for part of it.
-
Kevin, PM received, acknowledged, answered and I'll take it to our club meeting this coming Tuesday. As I mentioned, I may try to make it depending on moose hunting success Saturday.
-
I can come help out.

Hey Tom , think any of the RMDRA would like to come to this? Bypass does have some single track leading off of this trail. They have been very active in Mclean this year with other projects. Not sure if they wanted to add another one to their list.
I'll be trying to get out with the excavator the week before to get the dirt work started.
-
We have an upcoming trail project in McLean on October 24 & 25 (Sat. & Sun.). We will be removing one fence line along a unsustainable section of trail and moving it along a new line. There will also be heavy equipment working with us to install culverts across sections of the trail.
We will need at least 20 volunteers on each day to work on this project. A list of tools and additional equipment will posted closer to the date.
Really wanted to give everyone enough notice so that we can get as many people as out as possible!
Has anyone notified Amanda so she can add this to the ABprojects web page www.abprojects.org ? Rememebr ASRD list this page on trhe back of their maps as the place to go for trail project information. If not, it should be done as its a good way for users to see whats being done out there.
-
I've posted this trail project on the FWS forum as well. Gunther may be out on the Sunday. Hopefully, we'll get some others out as well!
-
I can come to help at least one day and possibly both depending on work.
-
We should be out for one of those days.
-
Could I bother someone to PM or email any more information to me about this project. Specifics, and tools required. I've checked the Alberta Projects website and see nothing for up coming projects for the McLean area yet. Or post some detailed information here so I have something to take to the FWS membership.
Thanks

-
Kevin, count me in for Saturday. (Sorry, I can't make it on Sunday.)
I have a truck-box utility trailer that I can bring out if it will be helpful.
Also, it looks like the post pounder transport is handled, but if things change, I could leave the Jeep and trailer at home and haul the post pounder out with my Envoy. I'm in the far NW of Calgary. Let me know which you'd prefer.
-
looks like im gonna bring out the grand cherokkee. is anyone else camping overnight. thinking of bringing the camper
-
Since Gunther and his club members are invited would it be ok to spread the word to others clubs? I am not a Jeep owner (though I maintianed a 98 XJ for 11 years) but have wheeled with a few folks from this club.

I've PM'd you. It would be great to have more bodies. Let me know what clubs and how many people we may expect ;D
-
If anyone has access to a large dump trailer and is available to help Dave with the earth moving a second trailer would be a big help? Please post what you have and your contact info so Dave can get a hold of you.
There are really two projects happening. Moving a fence and some re-contouring and dirt work to solve drainage issues. Dave will need a few assistance to help him but we are going to ask those that are not directly helping with the dirt work to stay clear of that area for safety, as there will be heavy equipment working. We can discuses that more at a safety meeting each morning before we start.
Weather forecast looks to be good for a few days of trail work. ;D
-
K... do you think Rick and I could get out there with our stock JK? If so, we may come join you to get a trail project in there ;) lemme know.

You will have no problem getting in. Come on out!!
-
Does anyone out there have any empty wire spools that we might be able to use/borrow to roll wire while moving the fence?
Wooden spools would be best. Metal ones may also work. Please let me know!
-
How much wire? There has to be a bunch of those hose reels that are empty this time of year (mebbe on sale too) ... just a thought.
We just want to be able to wrap up the wire from one fence line and then move it to the new fence line. Very temporary. And we're cheap ;)
-
can i come out and help?
-
What size spools Kev? I can possibly get some that are on the rather large size. The kind that takes two people to lift variety. Free!
-
can i come out and help?
Everyone is welcome. Thanks. 8)
Please were proper clothing for working with barb wire and around equipment.
-
we can use a couple of 5 gallon pails as wire spools, they even come with a handty carrying handle. ;)

I need to transport fence posts and wire out to the work site for Saturday AM. Who is available with 4x4 trucks or trailers, with enough clearance for the trail?
The material is stored in Calgary and we can either load up on Friday night or load it up early on Saturday. I will have by utility trailer but need several more trucks and or trailers. We will discuses the exact plans at the CJA meeting on Wed night.
-

i have a longbox Ram but can not get out until Sat afternoon.
-
I have an 8' truck box utility trailer. I think I'll be free to load up some material on Friday (only after 7:00 though) Or early Sat morning. If stock rigs can make it into the worksite, then I'm quite sure my trailer can as well.....If not by my little stock TJ, then certainly by someones elses rig ;). Let me know where, when and what you want me to take..

Just to add to this... We are unable to get the post pounder from SRD and our new fav rental place tha we used last time told me that theirs had just been flipped so it's a no go.
I found one and have it on hold but it is in Cheadle which is on the east side of the city. We need someone to transport to and from the site. We can use a jeep to move it around the job site.
Post up if you can help out with this. Thanks.
-
How much does it weigh? I've got a 4' X 8' flatdeck trailer.
-
The post pounder is on wheels - just need a vehicle to tow it out.

It's not that heavy... we took one to waiporous and you could pull it with a Jeep without issues
-
Then I'll be happy to get it out there. I'll be at the meeting tomorrow night I can get the details there. I take it there will be a bobcat out there to attach it to?

i have this longbox truck but if it is not needed, i will come with my Pajero. Please advise.
Is there a wheelin run planned for after? Sat night?
i can not make any meeting for CJA (i work) so please fill me in here.

Hey Tom, I don't know what plans are with regards to a run after but with regards to the location. Its west of the gravel road. The project strats right beside the pond area where there use to be a culvert (washed out).
There is one mud hole coming in from the direction that can be messy. I hope is to drain it as soon as I get there with the excacvator and fill it. I'm thinking logs, fill and some cloth will be required to fix this before we can access the project with the culverts and dump trail.
Coming from the west side via the park lot would be a lot harder as the entire trail has it's challenges. I'm hoping I'll have time to get to that end as well and do some repairs.
-
from 1st post...
The project will happen on Oct 24 and 25. We will be meeting at the McLean creek store at 9:00 am on each day. We will work until 5:00 on Saturday and hopefully be able to complete everything by mid afternoon on Sunday.
Just follow the green squiggly line to the big green arrow. Just off McLean Creek road there are some mud and water holes. Some are soft bottom... one big one is just water and hard bottom ( easiest way). If you're unsure and coming in alone park your rig and walk up the trail you'll find us about 1 km in.

Thanks for the map - I was just making one!
We are meeting at the McLean creek store at 9:00 am sharp for a quick meeting to get organized both days. If you are coming later, head down the gravel road across from the store (heading south past the pond). The turn off is a few hundred yards past the Texas Gate on the right. I will try to mark the entrance with some orange tape. There may other vehicles parked there.
There is alot of fence to do so we may work until dusk with the installation of posts on Day 1. We can pack it up once we are done on Day 2. The big thing is to get the posts in as the pounder is a rental and needs to be returned.
Access should not be a problem. As Dave mentioned, there is one wet spot and he may have that fixed prior to us getting started. I've driven it with ease. Stay to the left going in. Please be careful driving in as there will be heavy equipment working.
Proper footwear, gloves, eye/ear protection are required when working around machinery. We are working with barbed wire so leather gloves will be needed. Bring extra clothes, food, water, etc. for the ever changing weather conditions. We are close to the store for coffee/snacks if needed. Bring your tools as listed in the first post.
Everyone will be required to sign a waiver prior to working - members included.
A few of us are camping at the McLean Creek Campground for Friday and Saturday night. If you'd like to stay for some fire time, you are welcome to join.
At this time, there is no organized run planned but feel free to plan something for the end of the day if you like.
The post pounder and extra materials will be picked up on Saturday morning. Final arrangements will be made at the meeting tonight (Wednesday).
Did I miss anything?
-

last time we stuck it on the back of a YJ (joey!) of which Trevor decided to violate with orange paint ;) no problems moving it around
-
I won't be able to make it but I got a highlift somebody can use ( I'm in the n.e and you will have to pick up)
-
Thanks Dave et al.
-
I just heard that the store and parking lot might be closed already. So it would be safe not to rely on the store for snacks and things like that. And we may have to meet on the shoulder. If this is the case .. there's more room in front of the pond on McLean creek road then right in front of the store and we can still be seen from the store there.
-
I'm coming down on Saturday morning. I'll work with Dave if you want, I have experience working with and around excavators.
-
For those that are helping move material I am starting to load at 7:00. Call me at 403-603-7354 or PM me for the address in the north west.
Thanks,
Blair
See you all on Saturday.
-
I already PM'd Kevin in more detail, but Pookapotomus might have nabbed me a spot for tonight, not 100%. But I CAN'T make it out there tonight, so if you need a spot you can always take over my spot if it was indeed being held for me still.
-
bad phone number. and the snow scared me away. i see yall sunday i guess
-
Just got back from this. Be sure to bring MUD BOOTS! You will need them. The trail was very greasy on the way out; once the sun came out. Be prepared for this please. Tow straps people.
-
guess i wont be going. the grand cherokee has no front tow hooks yet
-
Well like I mentioned. If I bag a moose the Saturday then I'll have to bow out on Sunday. I won't be able to join you as I have too much work ahead of me for tomorrow. Bagged that moose.
-

You can park at the road an walk in if you want. Only a short distance. I am heading back out for a 9:00 start.
-
I guess I can't post my pictures in here :( I'll start a trail report in the members section. If you want pics, PM me.

Right on.
Congrats on murdering Bullwinkle :D

I want the send a big THANK YOU to all the people that showed up this weekend. We got an amazing amount of fence installed. There is a small section left to do which I hope we can organize in the next few weeks to really finish everything off. That section is blocked for the most part by fallen trees for now. We will keep everyone posted - there is only about half day of work left to do.
The snow that dumped in Calgary on Sat did not make it to McLean and we enjoyed sunshine, good ole McLean creek mud and a winch fest. ;D I wish I had the energy at the end of the day today to do a final count of posts that went in but it was well over 100 - all wired and railed were required. It looks pretty darn good.
We had great feedback from other users of McLean that were out for the day riding and came across our project. None were upset that had to turn around when we had the trail closed off. We got thank-yous from them for helping to maintain our trail system. ;D
I have collected a few extra items from this weekend.
- bolt cutters (red handle)
- smallish shachle with blue paint on the bolt
- one red ratchet strap
If these are yours, PM me and we will make arrangements to get those items back to you.
Again, thanks everyone for coming out and lending your time to this project! :)
-
i think the ratchet strap is blairs i borrowed to do the posts at fisher east
-
Thank you to all the volunteers that came out from various groups. I would especially like to thank Kevin, Eric and Dave for leading the project. Great work!
I have an extra hammer that was left in my trailer.
-
Good job guys on the fencing project!!! good to see that you guys got lots done!!
Unfortunatly i could not make it because Nathan and I were helping Will (4playZJ) building his garage this week-end... the project got a little delayed bacause of the snow storm so we had to continue on Sunday also.. oh well. c'est la vie.
-
it wasa great weekend. there was a lot that got done. once the ball was rolling people moved and it all came together. if things worked out better for Dave on saturday then i think we would have gotten everything done on time. but since mother nature didnt play fair, we did what we could. i think a trail repair archive should be set-up. that way we know ahead of time what to bring tool-wise. and every trail repair needs an excavator with dave driving it.
thanks to all that organized this event.
