Anyone own a set of Wrangler MT/Rs?
Reviews of them? Are ya happy with them?
Other than the BFG MTRs, what's comparable?
Have a chance to get a deal on whatever tire I want (friend of a friend of a friend kinda deal :smile:)... So, suggestions?

street tire

Depends on what type of wheeling you plan on doing. I have a set of 31s and they are a very good all around offroad tire. They are very good on the street, and offroad they are at home in rocks and light mud. I know a bunch of guys in Edmonton that love them in the winter. In deep mud the MTRs suck. Now the BFG is better in the mud.
Its tough to pick a good all around tire especially on a daily driver because usually you want some decent onroad handling. If you are planning on wheeling in lots of mud go with a swamper. If you plan on more rocks and drier stuff then the MTR is a good choice, also the BFG is good as well.
Another tire to look at is the Truxus MT, decent on-road and pretty good off-road from what I hear.

chopper, definately an offroad... doesn't make sense to be on a wheeling forum and be askin 'bout street tires :wink:
yj, don't like boggin... too much maintenance required after-the-fact :)... really like rock crawling, lighter mud, that kinda jazz. it is a daily driver, but I work at home, so there really isnt' a whole lot of daily driving happening :)

MTR sound perfect for you, I really like mine for light mud, crawling and daily driving.

Actually it does, not everyone wants a solid off road tire. Some peeps, just want a tire that is average all over. I know a few guys who use MTR's as street tires and put on Swampers when it's time to play ;).
I also have MTR's and think they are a solid all round tire. I did not choose them for their off road abilities though. I chose them mostly for their street abilities, and the fact that they are an okay tire off-road. It's also nice because Fountain Tire offers lifetime balance with them :D. But for an off-road tire, I ran 33" bias ply TSL for a few weeks in the summer and they blew my MTR out of the water, rock, mud, sand, muskeg, you name it and the MTR's we simply outclassed. But the TSL's frigging sucked on the pavement and fade very fast.
Coin also influences a tire choice. For instance those bfg rock crawlers sound like they'd fit you nice but are what $400-$500 a pop? Another good all round tire is a Super Swamper Radial TSL (or SSR). It's heavy though and cost a pretty penny.

Well, if you don't do street miles, then the Interco Irok or BFG Krawler are the best for "rock crawling, lighter mud". Soft, sticky treads.
The other tires discussed in this thread are dual purpose tires designed for the road and off road.

The IROKs are an awesome mud tire almost as good as boggers but more street friendly and they do it all rocks, muskeg, side hills.

My $0.02:
I'm new to Jeeps and 4x4ing, and my Interco TRXUS tires are my first real "off-road" tire. I've driven friend's vehicles on other tires, but the TRXUS is the first offroad tire that I feel I can give an opinion on.
Honestly, I bought the TRXUS because they were well reviewed, and literally hundreds cheaper for a set than anything else I looked at (BFG AT/KOs, Goodyear MT/R).
1. For the light wheeling I have done so far, they have been great. Aired down even better.
2. The street wear is faster than an LT/AT tire, but better than I expected. I should get 2-3 seasons out of them.
3. They were better in snow and ice than I thought. Actually, great in snow, and so-so on ice. I've gone back to my 235 snow tires for the winter.
4. They are louder on road than an AT, but quieter than most mud tires. The wife never complained about noise.
Anyway, I'd recommend checking out the TRXUS MT.
